Summer clematis chatter...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Our Pink Champagnes must be twins. I'll get a photo tomorrow. Maybe next year it will amount to something.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks pirl. Your DOA is very lush, and nice blooms. I'm also going to trim the older clematis this weekend and see if I get a second flush of blooms, as discussed on the last thread. It was ridiculously hot here today, and I just couldn't stand another minute outside to get them done.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The older I get the more the heat bothers me and, combined with humidity, I'm a lost cause. I venture out to take photos and then return to the AC.

I haven't trimmed any back because they're almost all lush except for the new ones.

This Princess Diana is finally in bloom and was the most difficult one to photograph.

I planted PD at the same time as DOA, and no growth. I'm still hoping for a miracle. I haven't put anything in that spot to replace it yet.

Thomaston, CT

D of A and the Princess Diana are wonderful....I don't have any small flowered clems.....my art teacher sent an email today that we will be painting clems in class on Tues. All I have is Ibi....white flowers are awful to paint!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

PD took six years to get where it is now. The deer kept eating all new growth. DofA is recent so I'm very pleased that it bloomed.

Marilyn - maybe you could try something like this:
A white Asiatic lily, Eyeliner, that shows up well against the early morning (lack of) light and dark Asiatics behind it. Ibi should show up fine against greenery.

Candida is also white and yet shows up beautifully here:

Mine seemed to have just stopped doing anything, no new growth or buds and I cut back a few inches. I am afraid to do more since the few inches did not help.
Now new ones I got this spring and planted are finally putting out new growth,

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good job, roseycats. That is one way to make it larger!

Mine, too, Marie. I didn't even cut it back. It just sits there.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh that Candida is beautiful Pirl I've been looking for a pure white one here the last couple of years but can't find one.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I've never seen it locally, Lea.

Madame Julia Corrovan is GORGIOUS!

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Carolyn - Your Ragoochi is very nice. Mine just had its firsty bloom open. This is onlythe second year I have had it so I'm hoping it will get bigger. I am a sucker for the smaller tulip shaped blooms on clems.

That 'Madame Julia Correvon' is so lush and so beautiful, Carolyn.

Hi everybody, I think the grasshoppers are eating my clematis flowers, I have not seen a full flower in weeks. I had sprayed them, but they just munch on everything. The clematis , most of them are about 4 feet tall, but they are kind of skinny, hope next year they will create more branches and get stronger.

Hi Pirl, I have red some old posts on different plants, I have seen your picture of your yard with Astilbes (?) it looks so nice, tall pink flowers with all the other plants. I made that picture in my background on my Comp. I can picture you in it and your sweet husband on the lawnmower with his umbrella hat. I just tought to make you laugh on this 4th of July. Happy BBQ day to everyone. Etelka

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Those are wonderful blooms mtish and Carolyn. I can see why Madame JC is a favorite and Clementide is very classy, I am drooling b/c most my clems have been cut back and there are no blooms.
OK, I will go see that film! One year I accidentally planted a clem in a large pot with compost , not potting soil. It was a new clem. maybe the roots were 4 " long. At the end of the summer , they reached the bottom of a 2 1/2 ' pot.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Cross posted. Sorry to hear about the grasshoppers, yuck! Happy 4 th everyone!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sorry to hear about the grasshoppers decimating your clematises, Etelka. Some plants here were big on foliage this year but not many flowers and no flowers for some. I'm going to try Bloom Buster on them.

Jack finally gave up with his riding mowers and we hired a company to do the lawn work. I just can't convince the mowing guy to wear the umbrella hat! You did make me laugh!

Happy 4th to all. God bless America.

Pirl, like your DH Hat, I think that would make a good hat for yard work. Of course it might take off in space. HA! HA!
Happy 4th to All.

Perfect hat for gardening! Glad you have the lawn service....hired mine after DH turned the mower over on the bank...16 stitches....

Finally, my photo of Barbara Harrington. It bloomed several days ago. More buds coming, so I am very excited.

Love the umbrella hat. I think my mom had one, and she usually had a drink in her hand when she wore it! Happy 4th of July!

Color is awesome!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks to Roseycats, Marilyn and Jan. He put it on as a lark so I could take a photo but with the heat we had today I could have worn it yet I was too comfortable inside to dare try gardening.

The original owner of our house turned over his mower about 40 years ago. The older neighbors still talk about it. After all, Long Island is flat!

Lovely color, Jan. My Ernest Markham is in the same color family and is finally giving me more blooms.

Athens, PA

I love the hat too. It would go a long way to keep the sun off my face. It sure beats wearing sunscreen!

Happy 4th to all.

Thanks, Carolyn.

The scarecrow even got to enjoy it in 2008.
