Chives aren't Germinating!!

Macomb, MI

I planted some chive seeds almost 2 weeks ago. I thought they would have sprouted by now, but they haven't. It has been raining a lot lately so maybe the seeds were over-watered.

I've never started chives from seed before... my mom split her plant for me. If someone you know has chives already, I would recommend asking for a piece. Once you plant it, it's super hard to kill it:) I would send you some but it's probably not a good idea to send it across the border.

Alright thanks! I'm sure I could find someone!

I planted chives in a pot on our deck for the first time this year. They were slow to germinate - I don't think any came up before 2 or 3 weeks. Then they came up very spotty, and I scratched the soil lightly in between them and re-planted. I ended up using a whole pack of seeds in a 4-gallon pot. They're hard to see when they first come up, like little green hairs. I've got a good stand of them now, though, about 8"-9" tall. Patience.

Some years ago, I planted a pot of chives. They are still there, the clump is bigger, plus they have scattered their seeds around, so I now have more plants than I started with. I have not tried to start the seeds myself, they seem to do OK by themselves.

My chives just sprouted a couple of days ago! I'm pretty excited, but some of the grew upside down, so the seed is at the end of the plant 2 inches in the air!

"the seed is at the end of the plant 2 inches in the air!"

Sometimes that happens with tomato seedlings, and when it does it's a problem because the seed husk keeps the first two little false leaves from forming. You've gotta get it off, in that case.

I don't think the seed husk being carried up by the seedling would hurt chives, though. They don't form leaves or have to branch out, so it ought to just fall off the tip of the plant eventually.
