Why did lily stems rot?

Albany, ME(Zone 4b)

Several lilies began to wilt and turn yellow. When I bumped them the broke off at ground level. I found that the stems were hollow. They looked rotted out from the inside, but maybe something ate them from the inside?

These were extra lilies and I'd popped them into a fallow part of the garden that had rotted cow manure put onto it last fall. Could that have contributed?

Did you happen to notice any holes bored through the side of the stem?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

My guess,snails or slugs.

To Moby, no, no holes.

To the snails, slugs people, the damage wasn't visible until the stem broke in half.

yep....BORER!!!!!!!!!

Bluepoppy, do lilies have special borers? Or do "corn borers" attach everything? And what does one do about it?

well they tell me it is corn borer..I haven't found a remedy yet...I do take the stem off and cut down along it and can sometimes find the worm...Doesn't always happen though....and this year I have alot of borer for whatever reason....I had tried some systemic stuff this spring and that didn't seem to help any.....So really have no answer as to what to do......

Some critters just aren't affected by much. I have tobacco bud worms that eat my petunias and systemics only knock them back a bit.
