It has outgrown its space and is covering up other more desirable plants. It's a really nice plant but is 5' across and the landscaper planted it as if it would only get 3' across. It's only 7-8 years old and will probably spread even more. Can I dig it up and move it to another spot (I am going to cut down a huge yew hedge to a foot high and want to put this in front of it)?
Can I move a dwarf norway spruce shrub?
From what I have been able to determine. the best and safest time to move your Spruce would be in the spring as soon as the ground thaws enough to dig it up. Try to get as much rootball as possible and keep as much soil as possible around the rootball.Use a tarp to transport the plant to help keep the rootball in tact. It seems that trying to move them during the summer is too stressful and the rate of success is not very high (when digging up and relocating) Transplanting in the fall means the roots have to work overtime to keep moisture to the plant because of the cold drying winds.
It sounds like it has reached its' full spread (3 to 5 ft.) For the most reliable info in your area, contact your Co-operative extension service. Here is the link for that info

thank you for the info...not what i wanted to hear, but i'd rather not kill them, since they are nice plants.
You are too welcome...sorry it puts a hitch in the plans for a while. I would hate to see you lose them also. They are lovely "bones" for the garden. Perhaps your county agent may have better info for you.
