My gherkins are growing what seems like excessively sharp spines.
I know i harvested these (below) a little late so its pronounced but even the little ones are covered in the sharp hairs.
Im using Adam Gherkin (Cucumis sativus) from Johnny seeds who ive always had good experiences with but this cultivar Im not so sure about.
Are these excessively spiney or do most gherkins come out this way?
Is there any way to reduce spine growth?
I did use blossom set spray could that be a contributing factor?
Many thanks for any help
Stefan
My gherkins are too spiny and sharp?
Have not grown that one, but seems normal for the variety. Try a different pickler if you want something smoother.
I think once they are turned into pickles, they will be quite bumpy but not as prickly. Maybe. That is normal for sweet gherkins I've eaten.
I'm having good luck with Adam Gherkins this year. They are very spiny when small, but smooth out if you wait until they get larger. You can always peel them if you don't want to wait or want to eat them while they're still small. They make good pickles.
