climbing hydrangeas

halesworth, United Kingdom

I love hydrangeas , I would like to grow a climbing hydrangea up a wall that is in full sun ,would it survive ?? Also I went to Brittany France and saw the most spectacular coloured hydrangea ...deep maroon .does anyone know where I can get this colour hydrangea ? I loved the way the French people made hedges out of these beautiful plants.

Info on these says " mostly sunny" but not full sun

Schizophragma Moonlight False Hydrangea Vine
Hydrangea anomala Firefly

I've never seen a hydrangea that dark, that would be awesome

There are some hydrangeas that can be a very dark pink, I would guess that's what you saw. The color will depend on your soil pH--if your soil is acidic those hydrangeas would be blue, but if your soil is alkaline then they'll be pink. But it'll be hard to get an exact match to the color you saw in France unless you can find out exactly which cultivar it was and you have very similar soil chemistry. Even if your soil is alkaline, if it's not as alkaline as theirs you may not achieve the same color.

Here are a couple examples of cultivars that can be a dark color--but as I said you'd have to have the correct pH in order to achieve the color you want.

What beautiful plants the climbing hydrangea! If you allow them to climb a tree, do they eventually choke the tree like some vines do or is it safe to allow them to do this? I have a large oak in my front flower bed I would LOVE to do this with.

The climbing hydrangeas attach my aerial rootlets so they don't overtake a tree, good for masonry too!

I've looked into them too cause i want one for my pines, i guess they are slow growers the first few years then they really take off! They are also more tolerant of sun than most Hydrangea. The blooms aren't as showy but the foliage! Also some kinds have peeling bark and Change in the fall. :) good luck.
