Croton problem

Fargo, ND(Zone 4a)

I am growing a Croton indoors and I have had the plant for probably 7 years. It hasn't been doing great where I am currently living, but up until now it has at least been surviving. Over the past few weeks however the leaves have been getting papery and washed out, and then eventually fall off. I haven't moved the croton from where it has been living for 3 years, and it gets light from a west facing window. I even have a supplemental little grow light for it that comes on at night for a few hours. Could it be getting too much light? I really don't feel like it gets a ton, but maybe the grow light was a bad idea...

It's sad to see my little plant like this (I say little because it has pretty much stopped growing). It used to flower at my previous residence, but I'm not sure it'll ever get there again.

Any tips would be appreciated, thanks!

It would help if you could post some pictures.

It probably doesn't need the extra light at night, but that's probably not what's causing your problems either.

I'll try to get a picture up in the next few days. I don't know if you would be able to see the problem that well in a photo, but I'll do my best!

I just bought a Croton and came up with this info on a search. Hope it helps (and hope the site comes through correctly--had trouble getting it to copy).

Well better late than never. Here is the best picture I could get of my croton leaf...

It appears you have new buds forming on the stems.... that is a good sign. I had the same problem with leaf drop on my croton.... Here is what remedied my situation....
I repotted it in a larger pot with fresh new soil. I put it outside where it gets morning sun until 1pm or so. I also water it DAILY!! So far so good. It has put out about 10 new gorgeous leaves. They are a wonderful shade of neon yellow and they will turn red and green as they age. I also give it a dose of liquid fertilizer every 3 weeks or so.
I also turn my pot 1/4 turn once a week to be sure all angles are getting sun for even growth. Your pot looks rather small...... bump it up a couple sizes when you repot it. that's what I did and the results have been fantastic. I will get more info for you ASAP and report back ... work calls me at the moment. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice! My solution may have been more drastic but we'll see how it goes. I ended up cutting the branch that was having the most problems completely off. Unfortunately this was pretty much the bulk of my plant. What I am left with is about 4 leaves and a lot of empty branch that is trying to grow new buds. I am hopeful that it will branch from these buds a give me a lovely bushy plant back :) It might be wishful thinking but I needed to encourage it to branch out anyway as it was getting pretty lopsided, and if it dies...well...I'll be bummed, but I figure it sometimes happens. If it does survive I completely agree that it needs to be repotted! I've been wanting to for a while, but I didn't want to add aditional stress to the plant. So I think I'll wait until I see official new growth before I go that route.

I'm still not sure of the cause of the leaf death/dropping, but I'll report back if anything works.

Suggestions are still appreciated!
