Trumpet creeper dying? - not my intent

Austin, TX

Most of the threads related to Trumpet Creeper seem to be people looking to get rid of it. I have one of the newer named varieties, I forget which one. It came back strong after the winter, bloomed, and promptly started yellowing. First pale leaves with darker veins, now totally yellow leaves and they're dropping. I've tried Ironite (which seemed to help at first) and a 13-13-13 granular. The soil quality isn't great - pretty heavy clay. Austin (8b) is also in a pretty serious drought and it's been close to or over 100 degrees for the last few weeks. Yesterday I used a treegator (not the full 20 gallons) to get some deep watering. It's planted near a clematis and with canna - both are doing well.

I guess I can't tell if it's drought stress, a nutrient imbalance, or overwatering/clay soil problems. Or is it just 104 degrees outside? If I had leaves, I might drop them too.

Trumpet creeper is very drought tolerant, so you may be giving it too much care...grin It may well be the excessive heat that is distressing it. I have had plants react to the heat by dropping leaves, only to sprout new ones as tempertures hopefully return to normal.

I'm thinking it is the heat. Lately I've noticed flowers on the canna looking like they were dried on the plant. Pefect little brown tissue paper flowers, never even had a chnace to wilt. I may need to run a little piece of shade cloth along the top of the fence to give these guys a break.

So that is what's wrong with my trumpet vine. It's the heat. It keeps dropping leaves. It is new this spring and has been doing great. Until recently. But the temps are now at 108 daily and rising higher daily. This is my first time on Dave's garden and I found my answer so soon. This is great!

Extremely hot weather is as hard on the plants as it is us...add no rain and it gets even harder.

We actually got some rain this week...crossing my fingers that it will "share the wealth" with the rest of the drought-bitten gardeners out there..

Welcome Dwarfpapyrus....I think you will finds lots of good info here. Drought and high temps are really hard on young plants especially as they struggle to get established. You may also wanna try rigging some kind of shade for your trumpet vine during the hot afternoons.
