The mystery of the missing Asparagus

Hi there, I have a weird mystery I want help solving. My asparagus was doing beautifully (I planted nice fat roots) and this year none of them came up, not a one! When I dug up one of the roots, I found they were hollow! They had the covering but nothing inside, like a straw. They were all that way. Tragic, really. What is it and what can I do about it?
