I have hollyhocks and those of you who know them know I have rust. I have the 'Peaches and Dream' kind. I hate I ever got them because they're not doing well and supposed to be rust resistant but they're FULL of rust and I'm afraid that's what's on my Pink Malva now. Am I right?
From a dream to a nightmare!
Sorry, that does look like rust. Some years are worse than others for things like this, so if the conditions have been just right this year for rust you may get it even on things that are supposed to be resistant. I would remove the infected parts of the plants and make sure you do a really good job cleaning up the area going into winter and hopefully you won't have trouble next year. You can also sometimes improve your chances by preventative spraying of fungicide before symptoms start, but once the symptoms are there you can't do much. You might also try moving either the Malva or the hollyhocks next year, that way maybe you can avoid both of them getting infected when one gets it.
I'm getting rid of the hollyhocks, too many flowers to be worried with this. And the crazy part is they're across the yard from each other. But, you know how that goes. I will do as you say and thank you.
Oh, I figured they were next to each other. Not that they can't still both get rust in different parts of the yard, but if you have them next to each other then it pretty much guarantees that if one gets rust the other one will too.
