MD,
You want to trim back all the lower leaves that are hanging in your dirt. Splash up from watering can set up the uglies in your tomato plant.

This year, for the first time, I diligently trimmed all my lower leaves off, so none got wet when I watered. I went as high up as the first set of leaves below the first fruit cluster (find your first cluster of fruits and leave on the set of leaves immediately below the cluster -- cut off everything else below this set of leaves.) My tomato plants have been the healthiest they've ever been before. Don't let your leaves soak in the soil. It just breeds disease...

Thanks Gymgirl, will do!

MD,
There's another reason leaves would curl. I believe it has to do with something like spider mites, I think. Don't quote me on this one. But, post your question over on the tomatoes forum, and someone will answer you post haste, and toot sweet!

I experienced some leaf curling in only one of my plants this season, and I thought it was some dreaded disease setting in. But the plant was very healthy, otherwise. As the season progressed, I determined this curling was actually a characteristic of this particular plant (as far as I'm concerned...).

And, It wasn't broke, so I didn't try to fix it!

But, this isn't always the case, and more often than not, leaf curl is a symptom of something else that needs to be corrected. I'll look for you over in the tomatoes forum.

Yes, I looked around over at the tomato sight a bit, and it could be I have too much nitrogen in the soil, and possibly too much water-first reaction when I see a problem is to add more water and Miracle Grow! I'll back off and let it be for a bit, and see how things go. Lots of flowers, only two tomatos. But it's early yet.

I'm having the same problem with the leaf-curl but it only seems to be with the "Mr. Stripey's". Our other tomatoes are doing great, Big Boy & Better Boy plants are about 5' tall and we're starting to get the tomatoes to start turning color. The cherry varieties we planted have been producing for about 3 weeks now. I talked to a local garden center and they said to watch and see if the leafs were curled in the morning, if so, it might be a lack of water. Don't think that's the case. Watered regularly with a drip system, added some Miracle Grow sprayed a few days ago, no improvement.

Are Mr. Stripey's drought tolerant?? With this heat, not sure if that it or not. LOTS of direct sunlight, sunrise til about 6pm. Am I doing something wrong???

Please help.....

KevCarr59,
Did you read on the link about the difference between leaf curl and leaf roll? Check out the link to see if the answer might be there.

Do either of you see webbing and in the second picture the leaves look a mottled yellow. I'm thinking spider mites, they love hot dry conditions.

Parlez vous Francais, Cher?

And, that is ALL I know! My grandfather refused to teach us the Louisiana Patoit when we were little. Stigma attached as a poor man's language...such a shame...wish I knew it today...

Hamilton, ON(Zone 5b)

:D I'm just bugging you.... oui, je parle le francais, mais juste un petit peu :)

Phew!

"Como suh vah, maize ahmee?" Tee hee hee?

(I was in that original group of kids who learned phonics with project Headstart, back in the early 60s. It comes in handy, huh? And, I can read, too!

Hamilton, ON(Zone 5b)

haha... according to you, I'm plural. :P Ca va bien!
Interesting, I've never heard of "headstart", and I didn't think that Americans had any use for French :)

"Como suh vah, mon ahmee?"
Uh, being from New Orleans, with French (formal and Canadian Nova Scotian?), Spanish, AND Indian influences, we have a use for a LOT of different languages!

I grew up with a lot of "langiappe?" (sp) at the corner grocery stores! (lan-yapp)

^^_^^

Ah ok, that makes sense. I've heard before that there's a lot of French influence in New Orleans. I believe you mean Quebec, not Nova Scotia though? Quebec is our French province. I can just imagine, with all those different cultures melting together, how amazing the cuisine is there!

I just googled it... Lagniappe... that's cool!

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

It sure was! They'd give you an extra pork chop, or an extra slice of cheese, or an extra scoop of beans. A "little something extra!" But, you'd always have to say, "how 'bout a little lagniappe?"
