Butterfly bush lower leaves praying like folding?

East Alton, IL

I can't see anything on them. Could they be infested with something? Most of the blooms had been bloomed out so I trimmed 3/4 of them. It is just on lower part of of the plant the oldest leaves and the plant looks pretty good. Thank you.

Some pictures would help.

I plant low shrubs at the base of mine, as they tend to look scraggly at the bottom, but it's hard to know if that's the problem with yours or if it's a bug or other problem. You could always take a few leaf samples to a good nursery and have them look at them under a microscope.

After using lots of energy flowering, I suggest they need a good drink, not just a few squirts of water as you walk about with the garden hose, but stick your finger into the soil around the root area, I think you will find the soil is bone dry, give a good drink by laying the hose on the ground around the plant and let it run for about half an hour, or as I said before, add an upturned plastic bottle into the soil down at the roots, then as you water, fill the bottle up with water and this water will go down to the roots, you need to cut the bottom off the bottle to make it easy to fill up a few times with water, Liquid feed say 2 times a year.
I always cut down my Budliea early spring so they send out nice new shoots for flowering, it also helps control the size of these shrubs, they seem send out larger flower heads after this treatment. Good luck. WeeNel.

Thank you my daughter has camera for good pictures but she is out of town on a job. It is looking better though after a good soaking
So do the expended flower head have seeds on it? Should I keep and toss elsewhere I want some growing?

Have anyone tried Burgess's 3 in 1 butterfly bush? Thanks

I usually deadhead mine rather than trying to save seeds because it encourages them to rebloom. The one you have is probably a hybrid and the babies wouldn't come true from seed.

As far as the 3 in 1 bush...I don't know anything about it in particular, but I'd read the comments about Burgess in the Garden Watchdog before you order anything from them: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/233/
