What's the point of Bearded Iris Fruit???

Devon, PA

My Bearded Irises came with rhizomes and they bloomed this year for the first time, so I've never experienced Iris "fruit" before....What's it for???? I hear there are seeds inside...IRIS SEEDS???? Does anyone have any info on this phenomenon? I'm really just generally curious about it....I assume they are not for eating!

They're just like the seeds on any other plant. You usually find rhizomes for sale not seeds because with rhizomes you know what the flowers will look like, but if you grow them from seed you never know what the flowers would look like and they might not be as pretty as the parent plant. And the rhizomes probably bloom a lot sooner too.

Wow- you can grow Irises from seeds??? I had no idea! How crazy! How do I know when the fruit is ready to be harvested for the seeds?

Here's a picture of a ripe iris seed pod http://www.countrysideinfo.co.uk/seed_dispersl/water.htm It's a different species of iris but I imagine yours will look fairly similar.

Here are a few links about starting iris from seed:
