best way to tear out old garden

Dallas, TX

I am tearing out all of my bushes and putting new stuff in. There is a lot of roots form the old bushes and some type of coralbead vine that apparently roots really deep. And on one part there is a tree that I want to keep but the roots are getting in the way of tearing everything else out. I was wandering what is the best way to "start over" without having to have someone do it for me. I was thinking of a tiller, but would that get rid of all the roots?
Also around the tree, how do I get rid of all the roots without killing it? thanks for all replies.

Unless the roots are really small, they'll probably bend the blades on your tiller so I wouldn't suggest that approach. If the shrubs were small you might be able to dig them up completely, but if they're large with widespreading roots that becomes much more difficult (although there's probably equipment that you could rent to help you out--or hire someone to do it). As for the tree, if you want to keep it you need to leave its roots alone.

I have redid a thousand beds. I do it in stages. First roundup or dig up everything. I have done alot of things at this point. I have tilled, I have gotten new dirt from the landfill and I have laid old rugs, carpet or cardboard (with rocks on it) for a little while just to really kill all that is under it. If I were short on time...i would round up, till and then rake up roots..put some nice new dirt down and plant again. Good luck.
