Pick squash before they get too big?

Montgomery, TX

I guess thats why i don't see giant squash at the store! First time gardener and let some get too big. The regular size ones are great, the big ones are like trying to cut wood.

I hate to throw food away...and I've found that if you peel 'em, they work well in soups... or you could always compost them.

It always seems funny to me to harvest when they are so little, but it keeps the plant producing longer and the squash is so much better!

Ya I'll put them in compost heap. The little ones tasted good!

We had a zucchini that hid from us last year until it was almost too big... we found it and NO KIDDING it looked like a watermelon. When they get that big they are simply disgusting to eat... trust me, we tried. haha

If they're not much more than a foot long, you can grate them and make zucchini bread. I have had one lady ask me for my "biggies" for thatreason, she says they're just easier to work with. The older ones also work well with seed cavity removed and stuffed with sausage or a bread crumb filling.

I like to take the big ones and thick slice them, brush them with olive oil and pick your choice of spice and toss them on the grill them till the seeds fall out. Yummy, and you don't waste food!

Great idea! All of my squash is still tiny... yellow squash is about about inch long (for today anyway!)
