I planted pumpkin seeds six days ago, I am
unsure of the correct name, but they are the over three hundred pound variety. Anyway I forgot to scrap the seeds to rough the seed up with an emery board. What do I do? Dig them up or will they sprout still? Please help
Pumpkin seeds please help
Goldenway, I checked out about a dozen different links, ranging from planting the Baby Boo small white pumpkins up to the half ton Atlantic Giants, and found nothing in any of them about scarifying or abrading the seeds prior to planting. The one major planting note was to plant the seeds pointed end down and give them lots of compost/well rotted manure. It may take a bit longer to germinate, but think your seeds should be okay.
Perhaps someone here has had experience growing them. The only pumpkins I have grown have been volunteers from discarded jack o'lanterns and they nearly took over the compost bins....grin
Well it does make it easier for them to start if you rough up the shell or soak them overnight. They will just take longer to sprout if you don't.
I didn't know about scarifying or abrading and planted mine and they came up just fine. Took about 2 weeks. Baby Boo.
Thank you so much! My ankle is in a cast which makes it impossible to check on them, my husband did the garden this year and the last thing I would want is for him to dig up the seed to scratch them up. Thanks again I guess what maybe two more weeks added on if you don't rough up the seeds?
Small world goldenway, you're an hour north of me!
It would seem that it would only delay the sprouting by a couple days or so. Sorry about your ankle...hope you mend soon.
