Do corn seedlings need light when starting indoors?

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4a)

I'm *super* late in starting this corn, but the beds are ready and I've already planted most all of the companion plants already. I've started some seeds in starter pots, in a bottom layer of composed manure, then a layer of earthworm castings, then soil with seeds planted at 1" deep.

I have them inside to start under grow lights on shelves. Should have the lights on or off? Or should I turn them off overnight? I have no clue. You're advice is much appreciated!!!

Thanks!

you should be good to just plant the seeds.

The only time I've tried transplanting corn, it didn't work out well. I had some gaps where seeds didn't come up, and tried transplanting into those empty spaces from places in the rows where my corn came up thick. The transplanted corn seedlings were stunted and never developed along with the other stalks. I don't think corn transplants well.

I can't think of any reason for starting corn indoors. I think it ought to be planted directly into the ground, after the ground is warm, of course.

Thanks guys! I will just direct seed another pack I have.

That'll be best. I planted my sweet corn this Tuesday, got my soaker hoses in on Wednesday and watered it good. It all came up on Saturday, and with sunshine and 90 degree heat it was about an inch tall by the end of the day. When something sprouts and grows that quick, there's no need to start it indoors.
