Climbing roses

Sumter, SC

Hello! I bought and planted a couple of climbing roses back in April and they aren't growing--they're not dying either....what could be wrong? I was under the impression that these things grow quite quickly. There aren't any flowers or buds on them either.

There's probably nothing wrong--anytime you plant something it's going to take some time to get its roots established before you see top growth, flowers, etc. There's a saying "first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap". Not all plants take that long--fast growing ones will often take off a little sooner than that. So as long as they look healthy (no wilting, yellowing, leaves falling off, etc) you should just be patient and they'll grow & bloom when they're ready to.

Thank you, ecrane! I planted them in a blackened spot in the backyard--you know, I always read about how so and so turned this empty lot into a garden full of flowers....everything else I planted in that spot is dying except for the roses...I think the previous homeowners burned a lot of trash back there. It is really ugly back there and I just can't wait to see what else will grow in that spot.

What kind of trash was burned? if it was plastic, or rubber products, then the only way to get things to grow there may be to remove the contaminated soil and replace it with good earth. Sorry but plants will not survive in tainted earth.

Dyson, I did find pieces of tires and melted plastic and glass and rope and all kinds of stuff back there. I cleared everything out, tilled lots of compost into the bed and planted. I did dig separate huge holes for the roses and filled them with good topsoil amended with compost that I used in my veggie garden--so maybe that's why they're the only things alive, BUT maybe that's also the reason they're not really growing (because of the veggie garden soil?).

The vegie garden soil should not be a problem - most likely the surrounding soil is still to contaminated for good production.
