I think this is the Eastern Kingbird?

Could that be a Gray Catbird?

Wow I can't believe you get Crows in the yard nanny! Does that make the other birds scatter?

No not really.......They have always come to the yard since we moved here.......so I take it most people don't have them come to the yard??? lol

Nan, they do come and visit every so often. Currently I think they nest nearby, they do make a racket of noises when they do get together in the garden. lol

The bird in question above could be this very same one. A Greatcrest flyecatcher?

yes...and nice shot of it too!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Nan, thank you. Here is a close up shot of the Eastern Kingbird, it was a joy watching this bird in action. At one time it was so close like within hand reach ... that's until it realized that I was nearby with the camera in hands.

Very nice pics guys!

Hi Nan, I have never had one come into the yard here. I really like Crows but with all the Grackles coming in I guess I don't need anymore large back birds around. :-)

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I just love my crows! The downside to getting the new dog is that I can no longer put a dish out for them inside the fence area. I have to put anything outside of the fence or up in the platform....which they have learned to use, but it did take them some practice on landing at first! I am counting the days until the grackles leave!

This heat has me trapped inside...again! I do get out very early in the morning. But no good pics coming my way right now. *sigh*

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Nan, I hope the heat will let off soon and that you'll get to feel better--quick. Hmmm, what make you prefer the crows over the grackles Nan? I was told I've Fish-crows down here. I don't know which which is which, but some of the crows are just humonguous! They can easily be triple the size of a grackle. They often perch far away and won't come near when there are poeple around.

This past weeks, I've noticed this lonesome American Coot in our area. One that got left behind when their flocks have migrated back up North. Poor thing needs a buddy, at least the Mallards don't seem to mind its present while they're nesting in the vicinity.

I love Crows too especially after watching a special on them about how intelligent they are. The closest they came to my yard was the other year when they were landing in some very tall cotton trees in the next yard. They were breaking off smaller branches to take to their nest ( I guess). They are really handsome birds.

The heat wave is here too, right now it's 96 degrees out.

Cute American Coot lily!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Nanny, love your crows.

Lily, your jay is cute, but I'm surprised they don't come to feed more there. Love your flycatcher.

Mrs. Ed, that robin couldn't be any cuter.

Margaret, awesome photos of the crested tern and the little corella is gorgeous.

Here's one of several juvie Brewer's Blackbirds. Almost lost one yesterday when it ran into one of our large windows, but after leaving it alone for an hour, it was able to fly off as if nothing had happened. I, on the other hand, was a nervous wreck.

Thanks Pelle, I need to read up on them Crows. Here is a Redheaded wp, they haven't came to the feeder lately since their homes on a pine tree was taken down by storm.

This immature Bald Eagle had to fly by us twice yesterday to show off his catfish catch. He didn't seem to care about the turkey vultures and crows chasing after him.

Oh Duc, sorry you've had a scare, I'm glad though the bird recovered, and you too. Nice Bushtit, looks almost like a titmouse without a crest.

Marlton, NJ

Nice pic of the Eagle, Bushtit and Blackbird! Glad he recovered after awhile. It is nerve wracking.

Glad to see the Red-headed Woodpecker Lily!

(Zone 5a)

This bird popped up just as I was taking pictures for a tree ID. This is my favourite sparrow, a chipping. They are much less afraid of people than other birds.

Here's one with a petal in his bill.

We saw our first cedar waxwing Sunday evening. I did a little research on them and found out they will eat petals. We have no berries, yet. (We planted some shrubs this spring to attract birds) Are they picky about petals, or will they eat anything? Normally, I do not like critters eating my flowers, but I will gladly sacrifice a few to keep the Waxwings around.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Hi Chiilybean, welcome to the forum. So nice of you to share with us. I've seen the Waxwings and Robins eating petals from the Crabapples only. Maybe they do eat blossoms from other fruit trees, but I've never seen them eat flowers in my flower beds. I've seen the Purple finch eat Fushia buds, but they never eat enough, to do damage to the flowering plant. I've seen the Chipping Sparrow, Goldfinches and Purple Finches and Chickadees busy in the crabapple, but I thing they were after bugs, rather then the flowers.

Nanny, nice pic of the Crows, I too find them really intelligent. They have come to the yard in early Spring, when the snow was melting. I did attract them with dog and cat food, for photo opportunity. But did not keep it up, the Grackles and Starlings were also fond of the food. And I was getting some unwanted predators. They are still around, I think they are raiding the Grackle's nest. They are constantly being chase by a bunch of them.

Duc wonderful Eagle shot, the bushtit is so sweet on that Iris leaf and so glad your Brewer's Blackbird made out ok, and that your nerves settle there. I know the feeling!

Lily so happy to see the Redheaded Woodpecker again, glad he's still coming.

Margaret the blue really make the Corella stand out, very nicely. Great capture of the Tern bringing up the casting, ;)

Mrs Ed the Robin aren't all that shy of people. They are very daring at time, they will come only inches of me, when I'm sitting by the pond. Hope you get, many more opportunities of bathing time. Love the one you've caught.

Love is in the air, with these Waxwings. ;)

Awww, it's so nice to see the Waxwings. Burn, enjoy the sparrows, for mine all departed as the weather is hot hot down here. That's it. I'm gonna plant a crabe apple tree to replace my Yoshino cherry tree that I lost. nice pix everyone.

PERTH, Australia

Duc, I'm glad to hear the bird that flew into the window is OK. You and your pet Bald Eagles! Great shot.

Kim, I love your beautiful Woodpecker.

Welcome, Chillybean. I'm glad you've found the bird watching forum. Lovely little Sparrow.

Burn, you've got to enter that shot of the Waxwings in this year's photo contest. It's so romantic. That's awful for that poor juvenile with the bung leg. Are you able to get a close look to see what may be causing it?

Marlton, NJ

Burn, Lovely pic of the Waxwings! I'm surprised the Sparrow is still around too.

Norman, OK

Particularly enjoyed the pics from oz, great capture on the tern. burn, you are lucky to have waxwings in the yard. They are one of my favorite birds, but I don't really see them that often. One of their courtship rituals is to pass flower petals back and forth. You might watch for that. Would be a good scene to photo.

I went back down near the Canadian yesterday and the flooded field has dried up. All the night herons, ducks and shorebirds are gone and the Red-shouldered Hawks have fledged. Didn't see much.

The mockingbirds and bluebirds are getting along better. The male mocker has crowded Daddy off his favorite perching spot and he still tries to perch on the nest box occasionally, but Daddy puts his foot down on that. These mockers can be fierce, watched them chase a squirrel out of the yard yesterday. They don't give up.

Am enjoying every ones pics. I stop putting out dog/cat food for the crows too once the starlings and grackles show up. I will start again in the fall to get them ready for winter. One does have to take care not to attract the wrong things depending on where you live.

Red....you are really killing me with those tanager shots!! That one is gorgeous!

Norman, OK

I'm enjoying the tanagers, too, nanny. I don't enjoy the bumper crop of ticks in the woods this year, though.

An interesting pic of the male mocker with a lizard. I couldn't tell what he had until I edited this pic. I cropped it 3 times to get large enough. The lizard is missing its tail and the bird has the head in his mouth. Even though I couldn't identify it, I was thinking whatever this is, it's way too big for the babies to eat. I guess Daddy mocker decided that too. Right after this shot he wolfed it down head-first and whole.

I was a little surprised to see this young Rose-breasted Grosbeak yesterday. They usually have moved on to rural (I guess) areas by now.

That is a beautiful Tanager. I hope to see one someday.

A "fool me" bird. I guess in hopes of always seeing something new and exciting, I mis-ID things. Both the song sparrow and the dickcissels have been giving me the fits this year. And this is a Song Sparrow.

Chillybean, that appears to be some sort of sparrow in your photo...but not positive which one.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

It's a Song Sparrow

Resin

The brown dots on the chest of the sparrow would mislead me too. CB, The Brown Thrashers are very protective of their youngs, I knew they nest on a shrub by my sideyard. But I rarely spotted the juvies to capture a decent photo.

Here is an Eastern Kingbird, this one really took a liking of this arbor to hunt for bugs and capture 'em on mid air. It can put up quite a show knowing that I'm nearby shooting pics.

Oh, dear. You're right about the bird. It was the tale that threw me off and the fact it came so close. We've not seen song sparrows act like this before. Time for an edit.

Norman, OK

Went out to Lake Thunderbird early hoping to see some fawns, but got run home by a thunderstorm. Gray day now, sitting on the patio enjoying the birds, but no pics. Did see some young turkeys and got a shot of this Eastern Kingbird.

Cropped this shot a couple of times. A Great Egret taken at some distance on Lake T-bird this a.m. We'll see how it displays.
