French Magnolias for nematodes in garden

Gainesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Has anyone here used this method of getting rid of the nematodes? My MIL was told by the extension service to cover the garden with black plastic and leave it for a year letting the hot sun cook the nematodes. Then she got a newsletter in the mail saying French Magnolias get rid of them. Any experience with this problem?

I use them every year in my vegetable garden. Tell your MIL that it is the root of the marigold that keeps them away. At the end of the season she can till the root system of the marigolds into the soil. This will help for next year. Also, planting onions ( you can buy a bag of the small white onions at Walmarts for a few dollars) works. Just plant them around your plants and it is a natural insect deterrant. I am trying to find you a web site with all this info. Give me a little time and I will get back to you.

Thank you! I'm printing out and sending it to her. I knew about companion planting but wasn't aware of this one before. I have her some French Marigold seeds ordered already and we'll get busy when they get here. Another good tip about the onions, we'll do that too. First time in decades she hasn't been able to garden and she's at a complete loss bless her heart! We can totally understand that, can't we?
