Hostas and ground cover?

Salem, OR

Hi there, since my husband and I bought our house in 2009 we've discovered Hostas (which we LOVE) for our large and shady backyard. We have many big beds that border the grass and have begun to fill them w/ hostas and ferns. My question is if I planted a ground cover (sweet woodruff is what I had in mine) would my hostas be able to poke through it? Thanks for any info!

Read about sweet woodruff here:

Some sedums, the ground cover types, might be a much better choice.

Hi alyciasanders,

Look up Lamium Silver Beacon in DG Plant Files.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Your a girl after my own heart, I just love Hosta's, they have got real show off leaf and colours, the growers are bringing out new leaf sizes and flower hight every year I am not allowed to buy any more. My problem is the slugs and snails love them as much as I do,
there are loads of ground cover plants that enjoy the same situation and soil as Hostas, I like to group mine in clumps of 3 or 5 for a good in your face show rather than a single one here and there.
Anemone,
Astilbe.
Hellebores Christmas rose (Lantins)
Primulas.
Vinca.
Cyclamen.
Ajuga.
These are just some, but depending on what you want to get from the plants, like colour, flowers, texture, there are even more to choose from. Good luck, hope this gives you some ideas. WeeNel.
