Will be trying cantaloupe and small watermelon for the first time!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Make sure they have a good amount of water and you should be fine!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And room to spread, right?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh yeah, They are not as bad as squash and pumpkins though.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good. Squash are crazy!

Currently only have 2 tomato plants that go in containers on the deck.
I really need to get a veggie garden going.

Hudson, MA

Hello friends -
I'm new on these boards and DG in general -- having a lot of fun playing with the journal.

For the first time in years I've put in a full garden --- but I'm missing the melons you mentioned! I'm thinking of filling a spare tire with good compost and sneaking a baby cantaloupe plant into it so it can clamber around my back fence and potting bench.

I look forward to making new friends here and learning lots.

Hi Ingrid! Welcome, you'll love it here at Dave's!!!

Ingrid you will like it here. I have a sugar baby watermelon I will be planting for the 1st time - hopefully.

89 tomatoe plants - planted. Now starting peppers. 2 nardello, 4 bananna, 4 green bell and starting on jalapenos. Got 4 of them in yesterday and have 13 more to go. Lets see what I get in today and will move onto other stuff.

Welcome, Ingrid!

Sugar Baby is the one I bought. Will make another trip today or tomorrow to get more stuff.

Peppers are done ! Yay!!! I be done for the day, thank goodness.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I've got 3 toms planted, 4 peppers, 5 cukes, 6 lettuce and some peas and beans. I don't have much sun it the backyard, so decided to put veggies in with my flowers.

edited to add : the flowers are in the front yard and along the side of the house.

This year I planted 14 tomatoes, 2 peppers, green beans, beets, carrots, peas, lettuce, Swiss Chard, zukes, cukes, & yellow squash....about 1/4 of the garden is devoted to flowers......

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dang - you just reminded me about chard, which I love. Did not see it at my place. Bummer.

Thomaston, CT

Growing it for the first time...DH didn't like it, so I never planted it.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's delish!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

One of my favs....like it better than spinach. :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Me too. We like it simply sauteed with oil and garlic or with some tomato sauce. Yum!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not to mention it will keep going until frost.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - cut and come again. And it does not wither in heat like other greens.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I keep a few pots of greens on my deck--3 kinds of lettuce, parsley, cilantro, three oreganos, two basil varieties, two thymes, dill and mint. Fennel is with the flowers. I haven't found roquet yet to plant. My dog has found a job protecting them, but I surrender the strawberries and the fruit trees to the animals and birds. I've also started a seedless concord grape and a hardy green seedless grape this year. Perhaps my dog will expand his duties.

In my new veggie raised beds I have so far 8 tomatoes, 8 pattypan squash, radishes, 3 kinds of beets, various early lettuces, a few peas (lousy germination- too dry then too wet?), spinach (ditto), already harvested baby Bok Choy. Next: arugula, more Bok Choy, summer lettuces, pole beans, cukes, mizuna, mustard greens, ummmm I'm sure there's more, I'll be very busy this weekend!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

You guys are making me hungry!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Never had bok choy.

I did two types of small eggplants, three peppers, sun gold tomatoes, cukes, lettuce, cantaloupe, watermelon and basil. Still want to add chard.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Victor have you ever shown us a pic of your veggie garden?

Left to do is - radish's and a blueberry bush.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Oh yeah, 3 blueberry bushes are going along one side!

The older I get, the lazier I get...container gardening for veggies...soon, you will realize the truth, grasshopper.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, but I will get another. It's two large (4 X 8 X 30 inches high) cedar beds.

Got the sprinkler system up and running in the veggie garden. I have been hand watering for a week and they need a good soaking.

I find when you hand water ( with the hose) Weeds dont do well !

Thomaston, CT

I need to water tonight....saw my son's garden today....much nicer than mine.....was especially bummed when he said Anni, age 4, did at least half the planting.....

I would of said "duh"

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Planted 18 rows of corn and 3 rows of pea's, 20 foot rows.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Think we'll get some rain.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Save me from dragging out the hose. :)

For the veggie garden. 89 tomatoe plants. See that big pile in the back? Its sawdust. For the 1st year I am going to try to tamper down the weeds with it. Kicker - I have to haul it all in and mostly by the BUCKET as some rows are too small for a wheel barrow!

Very nice!

Looks good Sherrie!

Its big, or should I say bigger the better? I swear this is the last year and if I get blight - I will :::: You answer the question.
