How to cut a start from a Baptista Plant

Hello,

I have a large Baptista Plant that has been growing for about 5 or 6 years. I was to cut or dig a start for my neighbor. Can someone tell me if I dig up some of the plant or just cut off a stem at the base? Thank you.
