Please HELP

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

Mine is growing with a climbing rose. Could that be shading it too much?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sorry if you mentioned it before, Marie, but how old is your clematis? If it's new then it could be struggling. How close is it to the rose?

Louise (venu209) has clematis with roses so maybe she can help.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

This is the 3rd year for her and it growing up in the rose. Last year it bloomed nice.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

Here she is last year. But then again there were not that many leaves on the rose. It got black spot.

Black spot and the northeast go hand in hand. Fungicides can control it but when I spotted "causes blindness" on the label I decided black spot was better.

I really think any of our clematis issues, here in the northeast, is due to our very cool spring this year. Many of mine haven't bloomed at all or only given me one blossom.

We didn't have much of a Spring here in Dayton,Ohio this year. Our Spring was rain more rain hot more rain muggy, very few nice days.

Marie

I think it is more apt to be the weather and not the climbing rose shading out the clematis. I have clematis and climbing roses on the north side of my house and get blooms on both plants.

I am having problems this year with mildew and black spot on my clematis, roses, iris and phlox - it is this 'all over the place' weather we have been getting. It is supposed to rain all week this week in our area.

roseycats, I planted my Josephine last year in the Spring, so it's pretty new. It got over 10 feet tall last year and is headed that way this year! I even got a little rebloom on it last year, so I thought if it didn't survive the winter that I got my money's worth out of it! It's doing really good this year, so it must be happy! I know I'm happy with it!

marie_kap, I love your Josephine too!

Carolyn, I love that clematis! I've never seen anything like it!

I love all clematis, but really have a special fondness for the bell shaped ones. I put her in in 2008.

Holladay, UT(Zone 5a)

I didn't even know that there were bell shaped ones until you posted your picture! Another "must have" on my list! I guess it's a good thing that I saved a spot on the fence, just in case something amazing came along! Thanks for the name!

Nat -

I hope you have more than one spot!

Carolyn, are you suggesting that it spreads beyond imagination? :-) If so, I've got a really big spot to put it in! If not, it will be very happy where I want to plant it, and it will have room to grow! Please tell me that it will take over my entire yard! hahaha!!! It's so pretty!

No - I am just saying there are a lot of different ones that have the bell shaped form.

OH NO!! I didn't need to know that information!! haha!! I'm such a sucker for a pretty flower, and I really love these! I better get busy cutting some other things out of my "must have" list to make room for a few more of these beauties!

Another bell shaped one - Texensis Duchess of Albany growing on a Tardiva hydrangea.

Nice, I like that too. I will have to keep my eyes open for that one.The ones I got from Brushwood are really taking off now. So I am hoping for some good blooms. I did pinch them back a little like they said to do.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for a good reminder to pinch, Marie.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

I did say a little didn't I. I am so afraid to do much more than that...lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A little is fine. Once you've removed the tip you have broken the apical dominance so you'll get two stems in place of one.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

Phew. I am glad of that. Shoot next year I will pinch that sucker down to nothing then...lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Ha! You're a good sport.

Actually, the more you pinch (after every two sets of leaves, I believe) the more bushy the clematis will be.

That reminded me to update my Belle of Woking thread. I'll do it now.

Dayton, OH

nhuntley what did you do to get your Josephine to grow so fast? Mine is so small.

Holladay, UT(Zone 5a)

roseycats, I haven't done anything to it! Basically it is surviving in spite of me, not because of me! I've never even fertilized it until a couple of weeks ago when I gave it a little Epsom Salts as someone suggested I do. I can't tell that it's made any difference though. It's well mulched, and gets watered, but other than that, your guess is as good as mine!

Dayton, OH

It must be location then, because some of my Clematis's do better in certain area's, than in other's.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sometimes some plants hit what I call a "sweet spot" and they thrive. I've had it happen quite often as well as the reverse.

Holladay, UT(Zone 5a)

pirl, you are so right about that! It's hit or miss with me! I can have two of the same plants, side by side, and one will do fantastic, and the other will just survive. They get all the same care, but one is just happier that the other, and I have to think it's because they like the view from where they sit!

Natalie

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Maybe it's the view or maybe an abundance of some miracle ingredient in the soil.

Dayton, OH

By the way, one of Clematis's is coming back to life. I put an empty water jug,and cut the bottom and part of the top off, and set it over the Clematis, and now the flower is a little over 2" long.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hurray! Must be good news day because my original Omoshiro came back to life and is now about 10" tall.

It's the bright green growth - two stems. You can all ooh and aah over it if you wish. :-)

Great pirl. good luck. I hope mine comes back from being eaten...lol

Dayton, OH

good to hear that Pirl, isn't that your favorite Clematis?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Marie - thanks. Didn't you have two that the voles attacked? Did either rebound?

Thanks, Roseycats. It is my favorite clematis.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have not seen any sign of them coming back this year. maybe next year they will show up. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Did you try some Epsom Salt? I gave the old Omoshiro a big drink before we left for our vacation - about June 2nd or 3rd, and saw the new growth June 18th.

Good luck, Marie.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will do that today. Can I do that to the ones that have finished blooming?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sure!

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

ok thanks. will get that done.

Dayton, OH

I will try some Epsom Salt, when I get to the store to buy some.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We buy three or four at a time. The clerks must think we eat cement.
