I think it is more apt to be the weather and not the climbing rose shading out the clematis. I have clematis and climbing roses on the north side of my house and get blooms on both plants.

I am having problems this year with mildew and black spot on my clematis, roses, iris and phlox - it is this 'all over the place' weather we have been getting. It is supposed to rain all week this week in our area.
