first garden

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 5a)

this will be the first summer that i have money to start the garden ive always wanted! i know the basics of landscaoing/gardening, but i want to know what plants i should plant. my basic idea is i want blooms year round (if possible, idk if there are any plants that bloom in winter or not), with a variety of color, scents, shapes and sizes. i know its a lot to ask, but if someone could give me a starting point, like where/how to find different seasonal plants that would be a huge start!

Pictures of the area you want planted will help immensely.
Having a soil test done is always a great way to start so you know what plants will do well for you(acid or akaline), or if you have to add any amendments

Fall is the perfect time to do most planting, you may have a little time now since you are in zone 3??? (That can't be right....Colorado Springs is zone 5a) If you plant in spring you'll want to get plants in the ground early enough but after your last frost date so they have time to accumulate before it gets too hot.

To get some ideas and to browse I like going on HGTV or Better Homes and Gardens and check out gardening plans, some on line nurseries(like Bluestone, Garden Crossings or Sooner) have great advanced search engines to pull all the plants that are just for your zone and you can search by color, season, etc

You'll also need to think about how much sun/shade you have in different areas of your garden.

High Country Gardens is another nice online nursery--they specialize in plants for dry western climates. Some of the things they sell won't be hardy in your zone (by the way I believe flowAjen is correct that you're not in zone 3) but they should have some things that will work for you.
