growing hales best cantaloupes from seed

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi everybody!! I have a small garden in my backyard here in fredericksburg, virginia, and I am trying to grow some cantaloupe plants this year. I planted a hill of 3 hales best cantaloupe seeds about two weeks and the plants are still relatively small. The plants only have a couple of leaves and the height of the plants is only about 2-3 inches off the ground. I have put some black kow composted cow manure around the plants for fertilizer and I have been watering the plants about every two days. I also have been using miracle plant food once a week. I have a hill of a different variety of cantaloupe plants that I started as plants and they are doing pretty good. Do you think I am watering my plants too much or could this problem be a result of too much fertilizer or could have something to do with weather conditions? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot.

ok, I know there is somebody out there that knows something about growing hales best cantaloupes. My plants have grown a little since my last post. However, the vines really have not started to grow yet. I planted another variety of cantaloupe and it is doing really well. The vines are starting to branch out and I already have several flowers on the plants. The only thing that I have noticed is that when the flower drops off the plant there is not cantaloupe that starts to grow. Is this a pollination problem or is this a normal thing to happen? Is it too early in the year for the actual cantaloupe to start growing? I would greatly appreciate any comments or advice on this subject. I am new to growing cantaloupes and I need all the help I can get. Thank you.---Conor
