Pine tree plants

Elmwood Park, IL(Zone 5a)

I have a pine tree that has been in the yard for 25 years. I cleared out the branches about 8 years ago but not much grows there but weeds. I planted Hostas but they aren't doing very well. What can I plant there that will grow and look nice

Lots of folks down here in the south grow azaleas under their pine trees and they seem to grow very well. I've seen some azaleas under pines that have gotten huge.

Thanks, NL I will give that a try.

Azaleas are beautiful under pines. Camellias do well also.

Thanks JS for the suggestion. Glad I have the long weekend to find and plant our new plants. I will keep everyone posted on the progress. I will take a before picture and post it.

We currently have hostas trying to grow but they aren't doing too well.

As far as I know neither azalea or camellia will make it through winter in Illinois. There are rhodedenrons that can handle zone 5a and like their sister, azalea like acid soils like those under pines. lily of the valley also thrive in low sun and acid soil.

Personally I like pines under pines. http://www.songsparrow.com/ This link to Klehm's has fun dwarf and miniature evergreen options in every color from lemon-lime to burgundy and blue.

There are cold-zone hardy azaleas... check into the 'Northern Lights' series if it's of interest.

thanks for the info from my cold weather friends. Glad I didn't go buy anything yet. I will take the before pictures this weekend and let you know what I got.

Agree there are cold hardy azaleas and rodies that should work. We have them here. Northern Lights were developed in Minnesota so should be hardy enough.

The soil does have to be amended if you don't have acidic soil. If you get evergreen ones then they may have to be sprayed with an anti-desicant to help prevent winter.
