Hello All,
I need advice on how to move and transplant pecan saplings. I have them popping up everywhere. Guess the squirrels have been awfully busy. Most of the saplings are about 7 inches tall. They are smack in the middle of my flower beds and other undesired locations. I would like to relocate some and pot some up for trades. I also have more on the back property line near a chain link fence, these are much bigger, anywhere from a foot or so to several feet.
My mom gave me a sapling years ago, but a tornado ate it for dinner. Now that I have my own place, I am really trying to get it looking like a little paradise. Do the saplings need to be a certain size? Do they tolerate moving any time of year? Any soil recommendations for young trees? How about the young root systems? If I pot some up how long will they tolerate a container?
Sorry so many questions, but I really want to do this correctly. Thanks in advance. :)
Moving Pecan saplings, Need advice please
Hi Lily... Do be careful digging as pecans put down a tap root. Typically it is best to plant/transplant trees in the Fall or early Spring while they are dormant...less stress on the plant. Well worked 'native' soil is usually best (the same soil the seedling is growing in with clods and clots broken up) and after planting use a Root Stimulator mixed into the water.( http://www.livestrong.com/article/127858-use-liquid-root-stimulator/ ) Green Light, Ortho, Wilson's are all named brands and usually available at Big Box stores and garden centers.

P.S. Saw your pic of your blue -jays........and NO !! I am not stalking you (garden term) I was simply exploring the photo area forums. Photography is my true passion. Time wont let me garden AND take photos......But I do try as time allows.
Your spirit shines in all your posts. I just wanted you to know that we appreciate you.
