asiatic lily problem

Philadelphia, MS

The leaves on my asiatic lilies are going through a stage from yellowing leaves to purple. I do not feel as if they have been over watered or under watered, but I could be mistaken. The yellow stage in the picture is of another neighboring lily, but that is what the purple plant looked like about a week ago.

Hi Tphillip. Have you had a lot of the rain going on lately? Too much water can cause leaves to yellow. Also your lilies may have developed a fungus called botrytis from being too wet I could find nothing on them turning purple other than mentions of some plants leaves turning purple from too much sun.

another cause could be a lack of nutrients.

Found this also:

: Generally this is a plant disorder called chlorosis. Chlorosis is the result of the interruption of the production of chlorophyll (which cause the green pigment) due to not enough nitrogen or phosphorus and magnesium. Often this problem here in Manitoba is caused by a deficiency of Iron. One other cause may be not enough light over a long period of time. This may show up in yellow growing tips, ie rapid growing under heavy overcast conditions. Light, heat and a fertilizer boost should correct the problem.

You may want to research your mulch too tphillip, It looks like you may have the dyed mulch and I have heard of some problems using it.

Mulch will also cause problems if it is added too deeply and closely to already established plants. Good luck, let us know how things fare.
