Advice for new shrub / plant replacements

Rochester, MI

I recently moved into this home and would like to remove the 3 shabby looking shrubs in front...but have no idea what to plant in their place. I planted sedum and lilies at the corner where the driveway and walkway meet. I'm new to landscaping and I'm having a hard timing envisioning new plants or shrubs that would look good behind or surrounding the (?) tree. Evergreen options would be great. I like the look of boxwood but I'm not sure what type and quantity would look best.

I am in Michigan (zone 5 I believe) and the house faces south.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks so much.

I am a beginner too, and I dont have the vision thing either. I like to drive around and look at landscaping, noticing what looks good with a house that looks like mine. If you see someone out in the yard, gardeners like to talk about their gardens, and they will probably be happy to tell you what their plantings are.

I also like to put something that will be more in the middle of the yard, so I can see it from the windows..Sometimes just something out there to break up the view of snow helps in December, January, February

Michigan native plants.

I would also check out some landscaping books at the library and see what plant combinations they use. My first thought is viburnum (lots of variety...one the Korean spice has a great spring flower that is fragrant) or lilacs (if you get enough sun).

I always use Better Home and Gardens website to get some ideas

Make sure when planning what you put there you research the mature size of the shrub, you don't want it to crowd the walkway or have to be pruning it away from the house all the time

These on line nurseries have great advanced searches
