I have a shaded raised planter bed in my front yard and need some ideas for what to plant there. The bed is approximately 1.5' W x 12' L and currently includes one unidentified plant and several purple heart flowers. I would like to take out the green mystery plants and add some flowers and color, but keeping them under about 12" tall. I'm in Houston in Zone 8B/9 and would love some suggestions.

Need Flower & Plant Ideas for Shaded Planter
Coleus, small or tiny hosta, ferns and heuchera.
What about some perenial flowers?
The hosta, ferns and heuchera are all perennial.
Aquilegia, viola
The unidentified plant looks like solomon's seal. If it is then you might want to use that as a plant trade.
Coral Bells or Heuchera, lamium, ajuga, pictum, hostas, wood sorrel, or primula.
Try epimedium. It needs very little sun. It takes a while to settle in and is not a fast spreader. They have little blooms in early spring, and the heart-shaped foliage changes in the fall.
Hi danette,
try these ones out. Its best for planting in places with humid air of 25 degrees Fahrenheit which I think houston has this kind of climate.
Blue Daze - one of the morning group of perennial shrub. It reaches up to 12 inches high. You can plant using seeds or pruned brunches.
Annual Lion's Ear also known a leonitis nepetofolia. Grows under the sun with appropriate watering. Can be grown in semi shaded location as well.
Mums fast growing evergreen. It grows up to 5 tall. Best to grow during summer.
African Bush-Daisy very attractive to butterflies because of the blooming effect of the flowers. Its quite short and grows up to 3 feet tall.
they are best to grow in 2-3 months time. I hope this one helps you out.
Let me know if it worked for you.
