HORSERADISH

Chilhowee, MO

STARTED A SMALL PATCH OF HORSERADISH THIS SPRING. IT IS NOW BLOOMING, IS THIS BOLTING? SHOULD THE PLANTS BE PINCHED OR DOES IT MATTER.

Lynnwood, WA(Zone 7a)

My understanding of horseradish is that you need to do nothing to them after planting-there will be horseradish forever once it's planted. I might pinch buds just to keep the energy going to the roots but I'm not really sure about that.

Don't do anything. I have a patch that gets no attention at all. I dig some of it in the fall to make horseradish and leave it alone the rest of year. Return the trimmings to the soil to grow. FWIW my horseradish was MUCH hotter the 2nd year than the first. Bigger roots and age maybe?

First thing in the spring, the horseradish blooms with white flowers about 24" tall. The flowers smell really nice, like lilac blooms. After the flowers fade, you will see long wide leaves starting to grow from the ground and they too will be about 24" tall. I have had a patch inground for about 2 years now. I will try digging some this fall.

wisbill, does that mean I can plant the horseradish roots I buy and get plants?

Brooklyn, WI

Sorry, I don't know the answer. I started with cuttings/trimmings from a neighbor and put it in the ground and away it went. But that was fresh, I suppose if its fresh it would work.

Try it and see what happens. That's the fun part.

Oh, I will, if I can. The store I used to buy it from no longer has it, and don't know if they will again. I could order a case, but that's a bit much even for me:)

Catmad, yes. You can plant from pieces purchased at the store. Be sure to pick out fleshy roots that look fresh.
I've started a few different things purchased from the produce aisle like horseradish, ginger and garlic.

Thanks podster, I've done the ginger and garlic, too. Need to find a new store...:)

I understand. Our small town store doesn't handle anything 'exotic'.

Now I am excited to sniff the blooms ~ I didn't know they smelled good. Thanks Toni!
