Never heard of that method being called pruning, we call it dividing, unless I've read it wrong, to get more plants from the one dahlia, soon as the tiny buds form tiny leaves you cut this away attached to a bit of tuber, pot it up and you have a new plant exact same as the parent, as with getting larger flowers by nipping off some of the side buds growing on the same stem, this applied to lots of other plants like carnations, Chrisanth's, and even some types of roses, but you have to decide if you want show stopper flowers to enter competitions OR do you just want to enjoy lots of flowers and colour in your borders,
but it is fun to try out all the different way's to work with your plants, all are great ways to encourage your plants to work for you.
Good Luck. WeeNel.

My grandma called it 'pinching' to make the plant bushier.

Wee Nel - it's just basic pinching as you'd do with coleus or any plant to make it bushier.

I pinched this clematis (see the center stem has been pinched/removed?) and now it has two stems - doubling makes for a bushier clematis. When the new stems have two sets of leaves I will pinch it again.

Yes that the word pinching!! This is the first year I had done it.

Wee Nel,

We are home from the 5 week vacation and I am behind a lot of my gardening. I lost at least 25 hosta and told the 2 boys that i will never hire them again.

I hope to take pictures soon. Belle
