Morning Glories 2011 #03

Jackie - Thanks for posting your Fuji no Sora! Beautiful photo, btw! It also doesn't have heart-shaped leaves, as I remembered.

Tony - Nice cross! Lovely bloom! Looks large ... is it?

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the kind words and information on foliage... Looks like I have 3 mystery purpureas, 2 of which I thought were Fujis. Surprises can be fun sometimes!

Quite fond of your Fuji no Sora, too, Jackie!

MGMan, the foliage on that cross looks quite handsome!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Nick - Sorry to disappoint you on the possible IDs of some of your vines. Where did you get your seeds from? I do agree that I. purpureas can produce some neat surprises! :-) It will be interesting to see what the blooms look like! :-) I like ALL MGs!!! Some more than others, but I do like them all! :-) :-) :-)

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Becky, I got the Fujis in a trade with a DG'er who got them from a trade on another website. The "Scarlett NO'Hara" came from a DG'er who listed the seed as the true, solid red SOH... but this wasn't a trade, just postage for seeds. I got a lot of "extra" seeds from both individuals, so I can't really complain about either — as they were both very generous and cordial! ^_^

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Nick - Glad you didn't have to pay for them at a local store or online. It's not usually too big of a deal when it's a trade or for postage. You are right ... most folks are generous when it comes to trades. Some folks get crosses too and don't realize that it happens! Or a cross doesn't come true from seed. That happens more than not. I'm glad you are delighted with your Scarlett NO Hara bloom. It's all good! Enjoy those blooms. I am sure the vines will reward you with many more to come! :-)

Thanks Becky and Nick. Fuji no Sora has the tri lobed lvs. I have grown one nil with heart shaped lvs and it was one that Becky shared sds of with me. I think it was Plum Shadows, Too bad I've lost all my old pics from Oct 08 on back.

Norfolk, VA

Another bloom today, the star pattern seemed to vanish with similar phenotypes like the pollen parent (Early call pink x Akatsuki no Umi), instead, it is pink instead of blue. Bloom is nearly 4.5 inches across.

So pretty Helena. I have a Plum Tie Dye coming along, love yours.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie, I like those blooms a lot.

Dany, you have a lot better luck with auctions in Japan. For me "it's a lot easier to say than to do"!

Here's my dark Tsukiyono!

#2 WoW ...WoW !

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Great blooms again, helenahkh!

Purchased from the grower at $10.95 + shipping for 5 seeds, here's my first bloom of "Monet No Fuji" (as it's called on their website)...

edited to add: looks more like a blank canvas than anything I've seen by Monet!

Thanks Dany, that's Hanna hubuki x choco rose F1 a cross from A.

Nick, that's still a very pretty bloom. I also paid a pretty penny for some of my mg's too!

Here's Tsykiyono changing to a lavender color at noon.

A missed purpurea this morning.

Helena, stunning #3, is it a light Tsukiyono?

Nick, you may have the white Fuji no Monet, I grew that one a couple of yrs ago.
What color did they claim the bloom would be on their website? The no Monets can turn out white,.pink or the beautiful lilac blue or lavender blue. I'm hard pressed to even describe the true color.

Norfolk, VA

Helena- I love your blooms! I am in partial with vine #3. Is that from a cross?

Jackie, the person (whom I assume is the sole seller of the original mutation) states that after 4 generations the colors/patterns are repeated in succesive grow-outs. I realize now that it takes 7 or more generations to consider a cultivar stable. I didn't know that before I ordered the seeds. I just wish the seller would have added a statement to the effect that due to genetic diversity, it's possible some plants will produce flowers with different colors & patterns than described and in the images shown.

It's still a nice bloom since I don't [think I] have any solid whites growing. :)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Nick, You could still end up with the true no Monet. You might plant another sd or two from that batch of sds. You might be pleasantly surprised. My 2 different seedlings
came out of the same batch of sds last yr.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - NICE blooms!!!♥♥ I am really partial to Tsykiyono (#3). I think it's because I've not grown that one to see blooms yet. But I got one of your seeds sprouting right now! I can't wait to see blooms on it! And I agree that your #2 (a cross from Antoinette) is a winner! I got a kick out of your patriotic I. purpurea bloom in the late afternoon! Cute!

Nick - Jackie is absolutely right about all the info she shared concerning Fuji no Monet. I've gotten solid whites, pinks, and purples as well as the true FNM as F1's and F2's from a true seed. It's fascinating how it picks up those recessive genes and flip-flops back again! That cultivar is a fun one to grow out for several generations! :-) That's a bit pricey though for 5 seeds to get recessive genes. I would be a little disappointed. I hope you get a true FNM from any F1 seeds. :-)

Not much in the way of MG blooms here yet. Indoor vines are grow right along. Outdoor seedlings are kickin' up their cotyledons and producing their first true leaves! I am still trying to learn what the color of the hypocotyl means in the way of the bloom pattern and color. I need to start taking more cotyledon & hypocotyl photos to keep track. All I remember is if there are flecks or specks on the hypocotyl, then it will be a speckled bloom. :-)

My Moonflower vines are starting to bloom. This is the second bloom. I missed the first one the day before this one bloomed.

I took this photo of two Fuji Kawata blooms. Interesting how one has a pronounced star pattern and the other has what appears to a much more dense star pattern ...

wow! beautiful blooms everyone.... how did I miss this thread?

Becky, I do like the Kawata, looking forward to my blooms.:-)

Helena,

I just love your Tsukiyono.

Gautier, MS

Thanks everyone. Very nice blooms Becky.

Yes # 3 is Tsukiyono. I'm growing 3 vines from last years seeds, 2 have more white with gray stripes and one vine is making dark blooms so far.

Thanks Debra for a pretty white mg. I do want to put a red-pink, white and blue vine to grow together but that purpurea did the job!

Love all your new blooms Helena. The Purple Tie Dye is great, waiting on mine
to start blooming. Beautiful color on the Asagao bloom.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

gorgeous blooms! I just undid all the bags of seeds and vines from last eyar and had forgotten how many varieties I had, after planting three packs of japanese red, white and blue from onalees/ large flowers. can't wait for blooms. the moon flowers that were in the basement are growing like crazy outside, and I am so glad I don't have to start from scratch on those things.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie and Debra.

From American Seed, Flying Saucer with blue star cross?
