shaping a seven sons (heptacodium Miconioides) into a tree?

How can I achieve it in a way that I may have only about 4 or less main branches/trunks?

Hi cobrisco,

I've got one of these in my front yard and they are quite vigorous. Pick the most upright and straight stems, preferably in the centre of the plant, and prune the remainder at the base of the plant. You will get suckers growing at the base and instead of pruning them, twist the suckers until they are removed. This is one way of preventing the suckers from returning as it damages the growing point.

I tend to prune mine at about 4/5' at any time of the year and the shrub just grows happily back. I like enjoying the white blooms in the fall at eye level.

I wanted it to look similar to this one taken in the winter...You can see the branches well in a tree form. It's beautiful! I know mine is young, but I have lots of branches coming out from the bottom, should I wait to grow a bit to pick a "main" one? Thanks in advance to all "tippers" out there.

In the photo in the snow, there is one main branch but on your shrub there's 3 nice upright stems and, if it were my shrub, I'd prune out everything except the 3 nice stems. You can pick a main stem next spring.

Here's a pic I took of an old one.
