Last year I got a compost tumbler - my first experience with composting. I'm not sure I put in the right proportions of green/brown material, but kept adding to it all season. In opening the tumbler this spring, I have lots of "clods" - material all stuck/clumped together in a tight ball. Does it just need more time to "cook" or does it need to be mixed and perhaps dried out? I turn the tumbler a few times a week, but have never added any activators to it. I'd like to start using it this spring, adding to my gardens, but not sure if it is ready.
Compost ready?
it probably needs to cook a little longer. i'd water it, since it should be moist in order to break down properly.
what exactly did you put in there? that will help to know too.
Last spring, I put in a lot of what I thought was "brown" material - dried foliage from my perennials. All season, I added veggie/fruit waste from the kitchen (no meat or dairy or fat though). Periodically in the summer I would add grass clippings and in the fall I added leaves (not shredded up though). It has been raining here this spring and I think the mixture is quite moist already, as the tumbler has small holes in the top.
