Is this nursery plant diseased? (photo)

Asheville, NC

This mandevilla was marked down at a local nursery. At first I thought this white stuff on the leaves was probably residue from a foliar feeding or similar, but it doesn't wash off. Could it be a disease?

Hmm.. Your assumptions were the same as mine at first look. Keep the plant away from all other plants you have and monitor it for a few weeks. I do think it is a residue or possible hard water staining.

It looks like hard water deposits to me too, not a disease.

Hi All,

Isn't that what powdery mildew looks like? I ask, not to scare Fabra, but because I'm genuinely curious.

Thanks,

With powdery mildew, the edges of the spots would look fuzzier, vs here it looks like an outline of where water drops used to be and they dried and left a deposit behind. Here are some images of powdery mildew, hopefully you can see about it looking fuzzier. http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1439&bih=692&q=powdery+mildew&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=

Thanks, ecrane. I do see the difference.

I agree with ecrane3. It also may have been something they sprayed at the wholesale nursery on the plant before it was shipped to the retail nursery. It happens often and I've seen the spray to prevent powdery mildew look like that. It'll go away with time and rain.

A lot of growers and nurseries use an' over the top' herbicide like Gallery to keep weed growth out of containers...it also leaves behind a bit of "staining" that goes away in time.

This is not a disease. The plant is in excellent health. From the blueish color, if picture is accurate it is most likely copper fungicide or liquid fertiilzer based on the species and need to control bacterial spot in the nursery, it is most likely copper.. no worries it is supposed to stick to the leaves. it will wear off in a couple of weeks.

Copper is the agricultural equivalent to bleach in the home. Kills bacteria on contact but safe for plants.

I also have the same staining on my mandevilla, and I assumed it was just water staining. The new leaves, which are coming slowly but surely, look fine. Fabra, if your plants start doing something funky let me know!
