Making a garden pond.

Lancashire, United Kingdom

I wanted to re-landscape an area of the garden and to build a garden pond that would be a feature. I did and was very happy with the results. I've written it up, with before, during and after photos together with the specifications and calculations needed. I hope there are some tips here that others find useful.

It is good to know some important reason why you are building garden pond before construction. here are some tips to be kept in mind. 1) Location: You'll probably want to put your garden pond in a location where it can be viewed and heard from as many points as possible: near a patio or deck, an outdoor living area, or a location from where it can be viewed and heard through windows from inside the home. 2) Size: Make sure you wana have a mini-lake out back, or a smaller garden pond. 3) Depth: Temperature extremes should be minimized in the pond. If you intend on raising and keeping fish, it is important to make the pond as deep and as large as practical. 4) Overflow: Ponds must have an overflow area a low point to control where the excess water should flow out of the pond when there is heavy rainfall.

We are also working on a list of edible pond plants at http://www.sustainedliving.org/content/articles/aquaticlifedir.html . I dunno about you but I like for everything I plant to be perennial, easy to maintain, and edible :) Saves me 800bucks a month not ever going to the grocery store
