Go for it. You could direct sow. Also, watch for cucumber bettles. I lost a few seedlings to the striped cucumber beetles. A light dusting with Sevin solved that issue.

The key will be keeping them well watered in your Texas heat. Giving them a bit of fertilizer when they start pushing vines will also help the cukes to grow properly. You can also save planting them by using cucumber starter plants. http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com/ProductCart/pc/Potted-Cucumber-Plants-for-Sale-Pickling-Slicing-Burpless-c56.htm

I started bush cucumber from seed here in the San Diego area. It is now starting to get its true leaves. I wonder though if it is OK. The cotyledons have white lines/markings all over them, more as time goes on. Is this normal? I thought it was bug trails, but it almost look like the marking is part of the leaf. Should I be worried. They seem healthy otherwise.

My first plants died also and i had to get more plants.I think mine was due to unusually cool weather.

ZSThomp, you may have leaf miners - they burrow through the leaf. I'm not sure how bad they are for the plant, but if you can snip off just the part with the trail, that's probably best.

I'd direct-sow them this time, and don't worry about being too late planting cucumbers. I plant small quantities several different times through the season, as cucumbers bear heavy for a short time and then taper off.

Most cucumbers bear around 60 days after planting, so I can direct-sow them here from now through July and have cukes two months later. You're in a warmer climate zone and might get away with planting anytime from now through August. They like plenty of water in the soil, but it's not good to keep the foliage wet. I like to use a soaker hose and slow-water cucumbers - don't let them get too dry.
