The local mall landscaper dug out their spent tall purple tulip bulbs. The leaves are still attached. Do I store them and how for fall planting?? or is it best to plant them back into the ground with or without leaves to store energy for next spring? I have about 4 dozen.
tulip bulbs dug out
You'll need to plant them (with the leaves) so they can continue to store energy for next year. Pots would work too if you don't have a permanent spot for them yet.
I kept about 40 bulbs in a giant pot with potting soil. How do I go about planting them now? Shall I just dump them out and separate them in...say like Sept. October? I hope they didnt rot.
Don't know what your zone is but, yes, you can carefully remove all the bulbs from the pot and plant them when your weather turns cooler and you're sure your part of the country has gotten into fall. Also, make sure they have all died back and you are just planting the bulbs without any green leaves--they should come up next spring.
Add some plant feed (multi Purpose would do) to the planting soil so that when the bulbs start to use there stored energy inside the bulb, then they get an extra boost from the soil feed, to know IF your stored bulbs are healthy and NOT rotted, just gently hold them between finger and thumb, gently press the side and IF it feels firm it is fine, if it feels spongy, then burn or throw away, Tulip bulbs that have rotted soon spread the rot to all the other bulbs.
Planting the bulbs is always a problem for lots of people, all bulbs need to be planted 2 1/2 times the hight of the bulb, so if your bulb measures 1 inch from pointed tip to root (bottom), you have to then bury the bulb 2 1/2 inches deep. there are exceptions like tubers (different from bulbs) and some large lily bulbs like to be deeper but as a general rule the advise I give is right.
Good luck. WeeNel.
Ooops! Forgot about the fertilizer! Thanks for picking up on that WeeNel--it's excellent advice.
No thanks needed Nature Lover, but good that we can help others eh, that's what this site is all about, no ego's, no smarty pants, and no hassle, what more do we want ha, ha, ha.take good care. WeeNel.
Right your are WeeNel and I like it like that.
Hi again Naturelover, It makes new gardeners think twice about becoming a member when there is a lot of smarty people trying to put others down, Gardening is supposed to a leisurely hobby unless it is your lively-hood, so why try be a know-it-all and the newbies wont come back. to be fair, most of the people are all so like minded, caring and a great sense of humour, so it is light entertainment as well as learning, thats why I like this site, and people like yourself who are genuinely interested in others feelings. take good care, we need people like you.
best regards, Weenel.
WeeNel I really like your philosophy I couldn't have said it better. Joe you could also put the bulbs in the vegetable bin of your fridge until fall when you can replant. They need that cool dormant stage to keep growing and flowering. I don't have to dig mine up but maybe every five years hear as we get some pretty cold winters. Good Luck!
