Alaska mosquito Control through flower beds?

North Pole, AK

I just moved to Alaska last fall when the population of mosquitos were low. But this spring, I have a large yard and live out in a rural area where I would like to enjoy my yard. So I am looking for any suggestions of plants and flowers that i can put in my yard and flower beds that will help me as a repellant. I am not a big fan of the bug sprays, for one my dogs, and two the other animals that pass through my yard. Any suggestions on plants that the vegatation eating animals wont eat up on me also would be very helpful also. We finally gotten rid of all our snow and am real excited to get excited to get started. All suggestions would be appreciated.

Marigolds are a general bug repellent but I don't know how well they'd grow in Alaska. They are also suppose to reseed themselves. There are a ton of good perennial herbs like mint and rosemary, lavender, and thyme, etc. I think anything that has a loud scent. If you have bat friends, Id even try to invite one on your land. Some snakes and frogs even eat bugs out the frame... I don't know what kind of wild life you got up there but I would research before you kill anything because it may be helping you beat those blood suckers. Good luck. Those things land on me the second I walk outside...

Also consider container gardening if it's too cold for the herbs to overwinter. I'm sure with enough time, your possibilities are endless.

I hate be the bearer of bad news, but as a life long Alaskan, I can attest that no plant will keep Alaskan mosquitos at bay, especially those in interior AK. Nothing against natural remedies, but not even 100% deet phases them (sadly I speak from experience). The absolute best, non-toxic solution is a Mosquito Magnet. They really work, even though they are pricey however, enjoying your yard for the 24 hours of daylight in early summer, and not becoming severely anemic = priceless! If you want to try the marigolds and herbs, they grow great in the interior. Good luck!
