Blueberry/Raspberry Planting and Soil Questions

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

I am planting my blueberries and raspberries in the ground. The dirt is heavy. I plan on digging holes and filling with a 4:1 peat to garden soil mixture and putting the blueberry and raspberry plants in holes in the "good" soil. Do I need to add sand, punice, or vermiculite to the "good" soil mixture for drainage? I will also sprinkle Espoma organic soil acidifier around every plant and water well to lower the soil pH.

Can I use Preen to prevent weeds from growing among the new plants, or do I have to wait (and for how long)?

Can I cover the soil with gravel instead of mulch? If not, is there another alternative to mulch?

Thank you.

One part of your question regarding preen-read the label for what it says about raspberries. I seem to recall that it is not for that use. Also, raspberries run amok. I will plant them only in containment from now on. I thought that the cement sidewalk would contain them but it didn't. They ran under and popped up 8 feet away. I am using 30 gallon pots, with drainage holes. I just hope they don't escape through those holes. The best mulch I have found is straw in a deep layer for weed control and generally, a friendly environment. good luck
