Hey! - Don't you people ever sleep???
That valerian is a wonderful herb, yes! My pharmacist told me about it when I told him how fitfully I was sleeping. He recommended Alluna, because it isn't habit-forming and isn't just Benadryl under the name "sleep aid". I paid almost $9 for 14 nights' worth -- Ouch! I worried about how we'd afford that amount if I needed more.
THEN I found a bottle of 50 caplets of just valerian for $5.98, marked down to $2.99 on clearance! It doesn't have the hops extract that Alluna does, but it has more valerian per dose and it's cheap. I REALLY notice a difference since taking it; I take two capsules about an hour before bedtime.
If I am having bad joint pain, I will sometimes take a Percogesic as well. Again, the pharmacist recommended it as it works for him. It is acetominophen and phenyltoloxamine citrate, an antihistamine which acts as a muscle relaxant and really helps.
Oh, and the earplugs help, too. ;o) It's been SO nice sleeping almost straight through for the first time in years! It's a Godsend to me!
I think the valarian works graet, tylenol pM and meletonian. While I was on call I never knew when I could sleep so I would try to sleep as early in the day as possible.I'd try those and they worked pretty good, but the valerian upset my stomach.Any one else have that problem???And this is my normal wake up time,I have to be to work at 3am.And yes this is Saturday and I'm up anyhow, but there's an auction in PA and we are taking some chickens there to sell off!65 of them.
I guess at this ridiculous hour I must respond to this post. haha! My head wakes me up to ponder weighty things: like: "if I tunnel into that coarse compost heap, will there be any compost finished enough to ring my perennials with before winter?",..& "I wonder what fall chores I had done in the garden by this time LAST year: perhaps I should go down & check my journal",...& "Let's try & imagine the blooming succession, month by month, of the border for NEXT year, now that I've put in all these new bulbs & rearranged all these perennials",...& "are those squirels out there right now digging up my newly-planted bulbs?",..& "can I miss church AGAIN if I'm unable to sleep soon?" ;)
OK ,I found out something you can do at this time of nite!!I just caught a skunk!!We have 2 skunks that are getting in with the chickens.I always just ignored them,I think they are cute,so I didn't want the DH to shoot them. But after doing some reading after finding a few carcasses in the pens,I found out they do kill and eat chickens, soooo,I got a have-a-heart trap out with eggs and catfood as bait.I set it up before I went to bed.The one time I checked the trap was sprung but the door to it haden't closed all the way. Well this time it was closed and a very large beautiful skunk was in it.I had the trap covered with a towel, they say they won't spray if its coverd 'cause they can't see you.Well threw a larger sheet over it and put it in the truck,Took him for a 5 mile ride and let him go in some state land. Now its set up to catch his brother!!You guys who can't sleep gotta try this!!!! PS no,I didn't get sprayed!!!
Good for you Crested...
As I was reading I wondered if you would get sprayed..never knew about that.."if they can't see you they won't spray.."
interesting..
Since joining DG's I have been getting up earlier than usual..about 6 a.m. (can't wait to see what's new)
I don't go to work till 10 a.m. so I have lots of time to play here..and also go for a stroll around the garden to see what is new there too..
Sleep! What's sleep? Only do that when I close my eyes.hehe
Some one mention skunks? I have gotten sprayed by one once when I was growing up on the farm. Our ducks had gotten over to the neighbors, wasn't far,but there was a very small pasture between us and the neighbors so the ducks would go over there once in a while. I was sent to go and bring the ducks back home,so started accross the pasture and out of the corner of my eye I spotted something. At the time I didn't know what it was,so had to go back and check it out.....was just curious mind you. Well,in no time at all, I found out exactly what it was. Went and got the ducks at the neighbors and got back home and my brother goes running in the house and says,'sissy, stinks'. Took a bath in tomato juice and dad burned my clothes.
Will never forget that day as long as I live.I was known as 'little stinker' for the longest time.
I just got back from relocating another one.I didn't know it but my neighbor has been trapping them too.he shot the first one but he let me take this one and let it go where I let the one go this morning.2 down, and haven't gotten sprayed ....YET!!!!
Some years ago my oldest daughter brought home a baby skunk whos mother had been killed on the road. We bottle fed her and raised her until one day she sprayed ever so little at one of the kids who were roughhousing with her.we then took her and had her de-scented and she was a delightful pet for many years before she died. Skunks will warn by stamping their front feet before spraying so at the first stamp it is best to get your own feet in motion!
I was told that you can't find a vet in NY state to descent them and even if you can, the paperwork for a permit to own one in NY is very hard to come by,guess they don't give out too many permits.I'd love to have one ,everyone I've talked to lately love them as pets.Thats why I'm out in the middle of the night trapping them instead of letting my DH shoot them. But they are to big a threat to my poultry to let them hang out!!
I guess I don't fit the norm either. I love getting up around 4 or 5 am. Probably because I had to for years. I go to bed around 10:00 or 11:00 but I usually rest an hour or so in the afternoon. Although the older I get, the more I have my "can't sleep" nights. But the early morning...I love it, quiet time, watching the sun come up, etc. vic ps...Poppysue, I'm glad you answered the question about how your garden looks so beautiful bc I was wondering that too. I've taken your garden tour and it's so perfect. If I worked all night I would never have a garden that beautiful. I really wish we didn't have to sleep either...think of all we could get done :-)
