How do I "stop" (or is it possible)

Tulare, CA

How do I stop a mulberry tree from bearing fruit, other than cutting it down and using it for firewood?

? Dont know that it is possible? Deflower it somehow? May not have to worry about it with all the bees being killed off (if bees are the pollinator for Mulberries).

I'm going to fertilize a grape vine when it starts to set blooms this year hoping it will drop the blooms. No body eats the grapes, it's on an arbor right out the back door and draws rats, coons, and possums. The landlord won,t let me cut it down and I can't deal with another rat infestation.

Flsusie, You are just the person I want to talk to. I would love to grow a grape vine. Do you have the name of some nuseries that I could order some cuttings from. How old do you think the vine is.

actually i'm the wrong person. ihave little to no knowledge on grapes. this one came with the house i rent from my cousin who got it from an elderly man she took care of. the vine is at least 10 years old and according to her had been declinig for the last several years due to his age and health. i moved in march of 2010 and gave it a light pruning and fertilized it and it responded with about 2 bushells of grapes. before it leafed out in 2011 i looked up info on properly pruning a grape and i cut almost 2/3rds from it and fertilized again after it leafed out. this time i got about 3 bushells of bigger, sweeter grapes. i wish it wasn't right next to the huose. the possums and coons don't bother me but the rats are a real problem. they come from blocks away and set up house close to the food source which happens to be my attic. my options are really limited because of my dogs, the coons, possums, and birds.

From what I have learned about growing grapes is that the vine should be pruned back every year so that the vine does not get too big & get out of control. By keeping it small, you might beable to manage it better. Tie it down & pick the grapes before they fall off the vine, keeping the food away from the Rats. Also, get some cats. I have 5 cats, & I have no rats or snakes, or lizards either. I would like the lizards & turtles but the cats like them too.
