edible or ornimental

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

I have some seeds from a trade, and I need to know more about them, (sorry, no pix, just seeds).

I have Fennel 'Foeniculum Valgave'

and

Rama Tulsi Holy Basil

Are these edible?????

The fennel was probably supposed to be Foeniculum vulgare, not "Valgave".

Tulsi is used to make herbal tea. I have some in my kitchen right now. So obviously it's edible. I don't know if you can put it in recipes like regular basil is used in, say, Italian dishes.

The basil are edible... Belle

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and holy basil are both very edible!! Both the leaves and bulb of the fennel can be used in cooking. They have a slightly licorice-type flavor. The leaves can be chopped and used as any herb; the bulb, once formed, can be used raw in salads, or lightly sauteed.

The thai basil is a little spicier of a flavor than sweet or Genovese basil, but can be used in any recipe calling for basil--just might want to use a little less of it. You can use the leaves fresh, or dried. Keep your plant pinched back--you don't want it to flower, as the flavor will get more sharp/bitter once it flowers.

Both plants are easy to grow from seed, and also do well in containers.

Let me know if you have other questions--I'll be happy to help if I can.
