Birds nest.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

Novice gardener here, really novice. Just started our container garden and now birds are making a nest in our herb container. What can I do to stop this and not be too cruel to the birds.
Thanks

If they are still in the building process and haven't laid any eggs yet, simply remove/destroy their nest. You may have to do this a few times but, eventually, they'll get the message and go build elsewhere.

Thank You!
I used gloves and did that this morning. Will check again when I get home and I've read that I can make a shiny type streamer thing and kinda scare them off. Will be doing that this evening! Thanks again for the advice!!

Anything shiny that has movement will help keep them away from your containers. We snap old cds in half and poke a small hole in the end and hang with fishing line from a coat hanger. I have a lightweight plastic stake with hook that I move around to different containers...the breeze keeps the cds moving and the reflections keep the birds moving. By varying the location the birds don't become used to the mobile. I also use the inexpensive silver colored pinwheels from the Dollar Store. They are a dollar each, made of plastic and last for quite some time....besides that, they are just plain fun....grin

Try an old cd. Lay it with the "shiny" side up and when the sun reflects off of it, the birds will be frightened. It works well for keeping the birds away from fruit trees too.
Happy Gardening!

we use the cd's too, better than a scarecrow.
