A friend asked if I could help id a thing on her oak trees... it looks like a styrofoam ball with orange/rust colored dots on it. Does any one have any ideas what it might be? I will try to get a picture from her if possible and post.
Odd formation on oak trees
A picture would help, but it's probably an insect gall--those are fairly common on oak trees. They're generally not harmful. Here's some info for you: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/in022
it is a wool sower gall - thank you so much as your link gave me the ideas to be able to find the answer.
