Lets see new lilies sprouting #2

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I wish lupines would grow well here. Too much clay.Your garden looks really great Rita

I spent most of the day planting lots of plants I bought at the nursery yesterday. Bought those marigolds yesterday too but planted them when I got home. I was thinking those lilies along there should be truely nice in season but just wanted something along in there to give season long color.

Those Lupines bloom here early. By the time the lilies bloom they are long done. I suppose they would bloom together if the lilies were Asiatics but they are mostly hybreds and all from THE LILY FARM.

Thank you both for the compliments on my garden :-))

Lilies I bought from The Lily Garden last spring are up tall in back of some roses.

Row of Red Alert lilies is up tall but no buds showing yet.

Meanwhile here is that lily section that I fixed up by planting the marigolds in front of them. It needed some all summer color there.

If you look thru from the driveway the back way, this is what you see.

Hah, I'm second only to Steve to have Lilies blooms this early. Lollipops just popped! LOL (yesterday's pix, I didn't have a chance to post them then).

Rita, a job well done. I'm looking forward to seeing more pix in the near future.

Your Lollipops are lovely. I always love seeing them, esapecially when they clump up. Congrats on having lily blooms. Mine aren't even budded yet.

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

Well, I keep reading but all I have thus far are 2-3" daffodils and tulips. Maybe one or two lilies have popped through the dirt but that is about it. peonies are unfurling leaves out of the ground so maybe in another six weeks I may have flowers there at least.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Yes, what's a difference a zone made! Steve's Peonies bloomed before mine (I lurked on your thread Steve), and mine followed suit. But, they're now done. Lillies are my next show in the garden.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Mstella, I know what you mean, lol! My daffs are still blooming, no tulips yet, peonies are just poking their heads out of the dirt, no lilies yet anywhere, but my alliums are starting to put on buds now. No leaves on trees or bushes yet either, but are budding now.

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

Maybe I am a 3b and just don't know it. :(

jmorth, how well do lilies in pots work? I would love to try some but am afraid their root requirements are too great. Of course I have some really big pots (24" across and the same deep). I was also thinking about putting the pots in the ground for easy retrieval as I do with some of my dahlias. That way I can break them up and not cut them up or lose and parts. but some of my lilies are the 5-7' types, at least where they are grown down south.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Whatever, however Jack cultivates his flowers -- in the ground or containers -- they all turned out fantastic! Jack, have your gloriosa lily up and going? one of my few tubers is up to be about 2.5 feet tall. At first I though that was all there left to the pot. But this morning I discovered a couple more sprouting.

The Lollipops lilies today:

I also have some Lollipops -- somewhere in the front beds. It is interesting that I never know what will come up. I move dirt and plants around so often that they carry little slivers of the bulbs from one place to another. I also was not good at identifying what I bought from Lowe's or Home Depot and have lost the names of about 5 of my lilies. Even the ones from The Lily Garden, where they send a 'freebee' -- I neglected to add to my database. And frankly, there are so many that look so similar it is hard to tell them apart. Plus places like Lowe's don't always put names on them, just "lily.' Anyway, the Shooting Stars are blossoming (my harbingers of spring), then Sylvestris Anemone, tulips, daffodils, Arabis, Arbeita, peonies. That is my schedule. Peonies blooming the end of June (trees) through August. Some lilies may show up in July if I am lucky.

Rita, your gardens are looking robust and healthy :-)

Most lupines won't do well here either, ge, but here it's because of the heat, though interestingly enough, the Bluebonnet, the state flower, which is an annual, is a lupine :-) I tried them once (regular lupines) and did not have good luck.

Lily, your Lolipops are beautiful :-) I have some of that type but yours look better. You're right, you and I seem to be in sync bloom-wise on most things. Our peonies this year were much earier than usual and normally bloom a couple weeks later which would be in line with yours. I love to watch the succession as it moves northward. Lilies seem to be right on time. I have lots of lilies opening now and even daylilies are starting to bloom, but it is rainy now so no pics tonight :-(

I was in Utah Monday and Tuesday in the SLC area. Went over to Park City and there I saw tulips and daffs appearing to be at peak bloom. It was WEIRD, LOL, coming from a state where I am used to seeing that in March or maybe early April for tulips. I did notice at higher elevations many of the trees weren't even leafed out yet. Strange feeling! Beautiful, though!

Thanks, Steve. My lilies are all looking really great and lovely green this spring, Mostly growing like crazy. Meantime I just planted 175 more new Asiatic lilies on Monday so they should bloom later than normal this year.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Enjoy your vacation in Utah Steve. Rita your garden is going to be the envy of the neighborhood this spring. I've some more Asiatic lilies that are about to open;

Looks like they will be open real soon. Meanwhile not even a sign of a bud around here.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

No sign of mine yet :-( Sure hope that I didn't lose them, but I'm beginning to think that the neighbors killed them when they were fixing their fence. I only had 3 of them, so will be bummed if they don't come back this year.

Wow, Rita, 175 more! Awesome! You will be drawing people from all over to admire your yard! It's going to be gorgeous! Can't wait to see the pictures when they are all in bloom!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I really love lillies because they are so pretty of course. But another thing that really draws me to them is that they take up only a small space so it is easy to find a spot for a few more LOL! Those 175 Asiatics that I just put in I planted all around in various daylily garden sections that I have.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Skellogg, I planted some new lilies to a corner of the garden last spring. I don't see any sign of them this year. I've noticed I've lost a few Asiatic as well as Oriental lilies over time. It kinda gradual loss, that if I didn't make a note of it. I may not have noticed. I afraid moles or voles (whichever kind that like plants) are responsible. Rita, awwww, I'd love to be your next door neighbor to take in all that beauties when your lilies bloom.

Here is another one of my early bloomers;

I seem to have lost some of my fancy trumpet and Orienpets over the winter also. These in that particular section are always late emerging but this year there are gaps and empty spots were nothing has appeared. Maybe the soil there is just not good as the lillies in the other parts of the garden thrive.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

mstella,
I've had excellent success with lilies in pots, most are dwarf Asiatics. After a season or two I usually transplant them into garden. The deeper the pot the better
lily_love,
I just started re-potting my Gloriosa containers. Tubers are waking up, as evidenced by pinkish/white tips at end of tubers.
Pic is yield from 1 pot.

Jack! Those look oh yum! How old are they?. Did they multiply after so many years or just one or two seasons? Whoa! I can imagine how your yard are doing to be decked out this year when they bloom. Mine usually bloom around July in my zone. I regcon yours are going to be toward the Fall? (if I remembered it right -- yours bloomed with Sweet Autumn Clematis?) I surmised you've a garden full of Gloriosa lilies this year if only you've 3 pots like it. Thanks for sharing info. on those lilies Jack.

Mary, the lilies in pots have only one great requirement: good drainage. If your container does not have good drainage, drill some holes. We use every size container you can imagine from 35 gallons down to a 10-inch diameter pot. The only time we had a problem was a plastic window box with a drain pan. Containers with plastic drain pans attached need to be separated from the container so that excess water can drain.

One year I dug up a bunch of bulbs to replant, and in the spring I found that I had forgotten one group of naked bulbs sitting in a container, out in the elements. They were fine. I always seem to purchase too many bulbs. In a 12-inch pot I stick about 6 or 7 bulbs. I always try to stick in one contrasting color bulb and possibly a calla lily or 2. I would not put in more than 3 bulbs in an 8-inch pot, but roots are not generally an issue. There is a limit to how much you can crowd and not have the pot fall over!

I love container planting for lots of things because it gives you the opportunity to move them around or to place them in the ground. I like to control how much sunlight the plants get.

When it comes to tomatoes or squash, I would never put them in a container smaller than 20 gallons.

Thanks for the info on potted lilies. I have short ones in pots and didnt think how long they would last. I will transplant next year.

Geezz it looks like you are two months behind us here.

the only lilies that are even 2" high are the chocolate lilies that grow in really cold places.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Lily, your lilies look great and i am at about the same point in development. Here are more of mine in front, still yellow but lots of new ones getting ready to open.

Hey, Steve, really pretty. I remember those yellow lilies you have from prior years. I think you have a lot of them and they always look great.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Rita :-) They are all just starting and the yellow ones always seem to be first. I took that pic this AM and am in Louisiana for work right now but am eager to see what will have opened when I return to DFW on Saturday.

Your gardens are looking great :-) I saw in the other thread still no sight of Dutch iris blooms? :-(

Tomah, WI

Steve, your yellow lilies are always a welcome site! My only lily blooms are cheaters. I got great pots of Tiny Padyhe & Tiny Sensation at Walmart of all places. I need to get them planted tomorrow if it doesn't storm. Can't wait to see whats bloomin' when you get home!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Steve, is there a name to those vibrant yellow lilies? DD sent me a bouquet of lilies with dark blue irises with yellow eyes for Mother's Day. They were sent in tight green buds and 3 days later they opened up beautifully. I had no Idea we can cut those buds so soon and "force" them like so. Amazing, flower's power. :)

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

Steve, what are the yellow lilies planted with? Are those peony bushes I see?

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

An orange Asiatic that's about to open. It's a few weeks early, and in the past has opened around Memorial Day.
