Hey there. Was walking around the garden the other day when I noticed what looks like rusty leaves. I took the this photo, but when I went out today, the leaves were dying and shriveled up.
Very peculiar - the bush beans that I DIDN'T thin out properly and look to be overcrowded seem to be doing well, while these bush beans a few inches away are croaking.
Help?
What's wrong with my bush beans?
They are fine it looks as if the two lower leaves are dieing as most do this is not a bad thing. unless you put fertilizer on the plants and they have burned up. However that does not appear to be the case i think your beans look very good you can simply pinch off the two lower leaves on the plants .

thank you; I was starting to freak out a bit. :)
Dawn.
You are welcome.
....when I noticed what looks like rusty leaves....
Help?
Looks like rust to me. I've never had it on my veggies but beans can get rusty. I've seen it on my roses and it looks similar. I say remove the infected leaves and if it progresses, it's time to spray with some copper.
I have done a bit of research on the Beans Vs. the Marigold some locations say its ok others say No don't mix them . yours do appear to be very close to the bean plants, the University of Tennessee Agriculture shows that while some marigolds are good for some beans they need to be spaced out and not a thick row very close to the bean plants.
I took the liberty of copying the photo and discussing it with our Master Gardner & Agriculture adviser here in my county. they stated : " the Marigolds were too close to the beans and were creating an issue / IE. the fact the row of Marigolds were so closely planted they were having an adverse affect on the Beans due to the inability to get the right amount of fresh air to grow properly". they sugested too thin the flowers "to fix the issue".
I hope this helps you out and that you do not mind the added help from an Ag. Pro here in Tennessee.

those are looking much better then the last photos did. it appears to be a bug or possible blithe issue now the plants are big enough to spray with a pepper Cheyenne or jalapeno Ground up and steeped in hot water) & soap mix that should take care of the bug issue if that is indeed what it is .
Here is what I make & use :
BUG B GONE AND CRITTER GITTER FROM YOUR GARDEN SPRAY
THE NATURAL WAY: THE SARGE.
6 Jalapeños

* Boil 4 Quarts of water to raging boil.
Put Ingredients in one (1) Gallon (Wide Mouth) Jug or Equivalent.
Pour Hot water in on top, **** (Let stand 48 hours) To Ferment. (Very Important)
Strain mix through panty hose.(NOT the Wife’s Good Ones! Ya could get hurt)
Mix will yield one gallon that can be mixed in 2 ½ Gal. sprayer. (Add cool water to fill line)
***Spray New and growing plants. Can be sprayed on any Flowers, Veggies, Trees and Bushes With Or Without Fruit bearing. DO NOT SPRAY IN HEAT OF DAY !
There is not a bug or critter around that will bother you garden.
*** The Bees Do Not Care****
I hope this helps you as always keep us posted and the good folks here on DG will try to help you out .
The Sarge
Do you water from the top or the bottom? Do you have mulch under them? How much air circulation do they get?
We had rust on our beans the first year we grew them. We learned to water from the bottom, not watering in the heat of the day, and to sprinkle horticultural cornmeal under the plants to help with the rust.
Sgt Yates:
OMG - thank you SO much for that recipe; I'll have to go out and get the stuff tomorrow.
StephanieTX:
currently using irrigation with a mister from top. However, have been getting on to my hubby to make it a simple drip line, not just for the leaves, but also because of the (bleeping) code enforcement.
We do not water in heat of day, though.
is horticultural cornmeal something i can get at home depot?
thanks.
You need to water ONLY from the bottom. Don't let the water get on the leaves much and be sure you water way, way early in the morning so the water can dry from the leaves before it warms up. Otherwise, the water starts burning the leaves (think water boiling from heat). If you don't already have one, get one of those water probes so you can be sure you're not overwatering. You just poke it in the ground about 1" deep and it has a little meter that says wet, moist, dry on it. Only water when on the dry side.
Horticultural cornmeal is probably not available at HD, but you can find it at feed stores and organic nurseries. In the fall and very early spring, you can apply it to your lawn for weed control, too. You can also soak your feet and hands in it for soft skin. :)
So Fla,
I know you have a bunch of Phosphorus mines in the FL area and some times the potting soil gets contaminated due to the reclaimed water that is used to wet the composting mix that makes up the potting soil . A simple soil test kit at HD or Lowes would let you know it this has happened to you . It is not a bad thing but you will need to bring the PH level back down for the beans they do not like the Phosphorus as much as some other plants you may have .
The spray I posted is one I have been mixing and now grow all of what is needed to make it each year in my own garden ,due to the big batch I make in the fall for the next year 33 + gallon is what I made last fall to use this year so it mulled all winter long . It is strong and will be mixed and used on everything I plant this year .
I agree with Stephanie, even the strawberry farmers in the plant city area ( Largest Berry farm close to you ) called Berry Boss run by M & L Brown has found that drip irrigation is / does best for the plants and will only use the over head “Rain Bird System late in the evening for mass watering during the driest of times .

How strange is it that I know 3 people from Plant City?? They work with me!
Stephanie,
are you talking bout Plant City, FL. or TX LOL
My wife's family lives down in FL thus i know what and how they do with their plants as well as the Man that brought the watering System to the US . the berry farmers needed a better way to grow and he is the one that has improved that ability and most all of them use it to date.
